Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Here is my spin on that wonderful and profound line:



Out, Out brief candle, By Brian37

To-deities, and to-gods, and to-God

Creeps in this petty tyrant from day to day

Until the extinction of humanity new ones will be invented

And all our yestergods have been created by fools

The way to tribal death. Out out brief myth

Claims are but a walking shadow, a poor reflection

That struts our narcissism upon the stage

And then is heard no more. It is a tale

Told by the credulous, full of sound and fury

Signifying nothing.

Such as I

Understand

The rightful why

 

He did what he did

And his reaction

To want to tear

Off the monster's head

 

But in a radio

His god logic

And of him I would ask

Why 10 years?

 

We are glad Charles

You freed them

 

But to us atheists

It seems a bit odd

That you give thanks

To the God you worship

 

That same God

Who could have each time

The monster tried

Rape and murder

Why don't you

Steal from your neighbor

 

This is such

The asinine query

From the believer

Upon hearing the word "atheist"

 

That if there were

No one watching

Nothing could stop us

From doing harm

 

Yes it is true

That "all this"

Is in fact

"All for nothing"

 

But in lacking a god

Does not mean

The atheist

Lacks morality

 

To us your need

For a cosmic parent

Is immature

Infantile

 

For to want thus

Is to say

You lack self control

And need that mental prison

 

Adult morality

Need not a god

It is doing the right thing

Even when no one is watching

Is not fatalistic

But to say you need to be watched

Is to be pessimistic

 

It is saying

You need a leash

You need a dictator

In the "debate"

Which should not be

The right argues

About death panels

 

Right now

As we speak

Some corporate goon

Is deciding my mother's "needs"

 

She got through

The operation fine

But I know from her priors

She will need time

 

Twice before

They let her lose

Convinced her

She was fine to leave

 

What they did

Was no different to me

Than convincing a drunk driver

They could drive

 

How could someone

On pain pills

Who is desperate for home

Make solid decisions?

 

They make falsely the measure

That she got through

But the recovery

Is important too.

 

These cubicle goons

And CEOs

Do not want to face

What they themselves would not do

 

My mom right now

Is one of those novelty toys

When you press the bottom

They go limp

 

She needs rehab

Which is just as important

As the operation

She went through

 

These greedy fucks

Did not see

The perils she ecaped

Because of her early release

Someone easy to manipulate

And play of their weakness?

 

I know my mom

And her independence

No one can name me

One nation

On this planet

That does not incarcerate

 

These tepid, uninspired dreamers

Would have us believe

In a vacuous plan, a cure

For social ills

 

Yet prisons exist

In every nation

With the full range

Of human cruelty

 

Please tell me

All ye fans

Of your cosmic elixir

Why such a spotty record?

 

If Allah seeks "Justice"

And so does Jesus

And their rival Yahweh

Whom are all powerful

 

Then why, do tell

That of crime

That any prision

Should exist at all?

 

Could it be

That people do bad

Even when

We don't want them to?

 

Could it be

There is no god

And simply humans

Who do bad?

 

Could it be

We are better off

As a species

To study our faults?

 

Could it be

A better answer

Is not in fantasy

But study our condition?

 

Maybe it could be

In every nation

Would need less prisons

If they had knowledge, not superstition.

Dreaming And Delusion,

 

To wonder if

You could get

To the top

Of Mt Everest

 

To wonder if

We could get

To our cosmic

Night light

 

To wonder if

We could get

To the

Red planet

 

Those dreams

Are good

They push

Human limits

 

Yet the anchor

On our species

Is a "dream"

In childish fantasy

 

It presumes

A utopia

Where only they

Are the winners

 

And worse

Not based

On observation

But feelings and tribalism

 

They too

Say it is ok to dream

But what they "dream"

Is of cartoon endings

 

The dreams

That make progress

Are not tribal or fictitious

Or label dependent

 

They need not

Of ancient myth

But that of reason

In observation

 

The theist "dreams"

Like a movie goer

After seeing Toy Story

Or ET

 

These are delusions

Not to be proud of

Not to be worshiped

Not to be revered

 

A "dream" in reality

That produces

Is pragmatic

It gets tested

 

A delusion

Has no quality control

It simply has to be

The common term

For those who "see"

Is that of "prophet", or "messiah"

 

Polytheism, long before

In many cultures

Had their "seers"

As well

 

In a riveting play

From the first page

This oracle

Said to Oedipus

 

"You killed your father

And married your mother"

His hubris responded

"That was not the case"

 

But as the page turned

His point of view

Slowly revealed

The vile truth

 

In the end

He he saw himself

As the flawed human

He really was

 

But when it comes

To claims of god

No one ever

Admits their guilt

 

I do not see

Allah or Yahweh

Or that of God

Ever doing the same

 

All the books

Claim victory

Never seeing

Their own flaws

 

I submit

Oedipus did

As a character

The god's of Abraham will never do

 

Admit guilt

In hurting others

Admit

That you are flawed.

 

No god

Can ever do

As a concept

What humans do

 

If a god were real

It could never

Measure up

To the courage

 

The courage of admitting

Being flawed

It can only survive through Hubris

At the start

Of the millennia

When I was married

We fancied a pet

 

At the time

My now X

Thought Peyton Manning

Was cute

 

So we adopted

An orange tabby

And took the kitten

To the vet

 

When the aid

Asked for his name

Little did we know

There were two ways to spell it

 

P- A -Y

Is what we gave

Neither of us knew

That that was for girls

 

When we returned

They pointed out our error

We laughed at our mistake

And told them to keep it

 

Since this time

I've been divorced

With no animosity

I kept the cat

 

This boy cat

Kept me entertained

Once fell off

A bay window ledge

 

I let him play

With my shoestring

On which the end

I kept my keys

 

The string got suck

Around his neck

So I let go

Not to strangle him

 

The clank

Of the keys

On the tile floor

That starts at one ear

Goes down the neck

An unseen bacteria

Can infect a healthy person

Through breathing and touch

Dolphins and whales

About choking when eating

Because of separate breathing

 

High in the sky

As eagles do fly

Have far better eyesight

They still outnumber us

In evolutionary history

So try as they might

This poem was inspired by

This poem was inspired by the bullshit "reverse discrimination" white guilt excuse people who are not racist use but also use to ignore the issue.  After the Zimmerman verdict some people argued about a story where 3 blacks were accused of murdering a white waitress claiming "Why isn't this getting national attention". This is nothing but selection bias and sample rate error. I watch the news every day, I hear more stories about white kids and white women being kidnapped and murdered, but the reality is that blacks are much more likely to be victims of murder. If any white person says "I am not racist", PLEASE STOP, instead of doing that, TALK TO YOUR BLACK FRIENDS AND CO WORKERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS, they will tell you the reality. Don't pay lip service to equality, OPEN YOUR FUCKING EARS AND LISTEN!

 

You can bring up a white waitress being murdered by 3 blacks and I can bring up Temar Boggs saving a white girl with nothing but a bicycle. And I can ask the same question "Why isn't Boggs making national news?"

But the truth is that "looks"

In all races, in all nations

Have their "bad guys"

 

The message missed

The mother warns

Her daughter to not

With her criminal son

 

I do agree

That message was missed

To avoid what goes on

Every day

Around the world

 

She could have been

Christian

Living Under  Warren Jeffs

In a cult compound

 

Or Sikh or Hindu

Whose parents insist

You are property

A mere dowry

 

With much more bravery

Than I could muster

This 11 year old girl

Showed extraodinary courage

 

On par with Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Whom I am sure

Will hear

Of Neda's story

 

Will look upon her

And be proud

That even such tender age

Can stand up for themselves

 

With college level language

Articulated her objection

To being property

To become a child bride

 

"Simply criminal"

This 11 year old said

On being sold

Like oxen or sheep

 

Humans are not tools

To be molded

To be subject

To dictation

 

Neda is Jefferson

And will prevail

And to all ages

Is humanity's hero!

Another ABBA inspired poem. Benny in a 2010 interview summed up life about how his music became successful but could apply to any aspect of life, "both work but mostly LUCK"

I now understand

When people confront you

And call what you do

Rubbish

 

When in the face of fear

You know something is there

When you know

You are on to something

 

Your critics scoff

And attack you

But you persist

And continue

 

It is not to say

Everyone will

Get to the top

If they persist

 

You will get

At every turn

Skeptics who

Don't like you

 

You don't script history

You simply live it

Do your best

And luck can strike

 

It is not rubbish

If you fail

It is not rubbish

If you try

 

The bands that mannage

A one hit wonder

Strive to become

What ABBA did

 

Don't think of success

In terms of paycheck

Or the house you live in

All you can do is your best

 

I know they know

Of artists unknown

They would claim

Deserve more fame

 

And not of music

But all of life

Think of those

Who did not make such heights

 

Your friend or co worker

Without compunction

Is more consistent

Than any other

 

Not perfect

Certainly flawed

But humble enough

To accept that of luck

Was an organizer

Advocated equality

And civil rights

He had beside him

A godless heathen

A huge part

Of King's success

Was the result

Of the support of an atheist.

 

Undaunted by dogs

Or fire hoses

Undaunted by beatings

They crossed all bridges

 

On the forfront

Most atheists are

Just like Randoph

Was back then

 

We may attack

The claims you make

We may say

All gods are fake

 

But rights are rights

And humans are humans

And we stand behind

Those of compassion

 

Atheists have always had

A long history

Of supporting progress

Of all minorities

 

Outside debate

And our blasphemy

We are all human

And value dignity

 

So to my friends

Who are theist

The lesson of King

Now make no mistake folks, I still hate superstition. I still find all claims of god/s absurd. I know they are merely human inventions and mental placebos. But when I think of history, and that of our species desire to be free from oppression, the labels may change and powers may shift over time, but I do know how to support human compassion, as do most atheists. This poem is an ode to black atheist and civil rights advocate Hubert Henry Harrison (1883-1927) and his quote, "Show me a population that is deeply religious and I will show you a servile population, content with whips and chains, … content to eat the bread of sorrow and drink the waters of affliction."

To a Museum

Depicting their horrors of war

 

Mangled and blown up

Stabbed and shot

The pictures were

Of their dead

 

A man in Iraq

Throws a shoe

At a leader

In disgust

For their civilian death

 

And that panting

When I was young

Made no sense

Until now

 

He meant it as

A reflection of

The horrors

Of war

 

Burning buildings

Posture of the bodies

A mother holds

Dying child

 

Some screaming

To the sky

Hands raised

In agony

 

Those faces

Are not spanish

Or Jewish

Or Japanese

 

Those are the faces

Of screams of agony

As bodies plummeted

From the towers

Of the chained negros

Tossed off slave ships

It does not have to be war

The vile propaganda

Of the word "settler"

When it should be

Were far from reality

 

Gold and greed

Troops side with the "pioneers"

The new comers

Were not heros

 

The crimson November morning

Followed a drunken twighlight

The stench of peity

Of celebrating blood lust

Cut all to pieces,

Worse mutilated than any I ever saw before;

 

The women cut all to pieces ...

With knives; scalped;

Their brains knocked out;

To be male

Down the street

They are reading and praying

Staying alive

Though their logic is dead

 

Pity Cassandra

Your fans cannot see

That your feigned prophacy

Is mere insanity

 

Sorry Casandra

I do understand

The age of reason

I wanted and did

Listen to instead of you

 

Sorry Cassandra

I don't believe

You or anyone

Has truth in mere dreams

 

So go and grieve

Cassandra over your romance

Of superstition

Which science is defeating

 

You didn't warn us

About tragedy

We know it always happens

In reality

 

You predicted nothing

Your dreams are insanity

Our final hour

Is certain in all cases

 

No mas Cassandra

Romancing pain

Bastardizing nature

With comic book claims

 

Only you Cassandra

Are caught in sleep

This poem is making the connection of mythological "prophecy" and currently held religions who truly believe in others who predict the future through reading holy books or believe in the writers of the holy books as if "prophecy" is real at all. "Prophecy" is fine in fairy tales and fiction, but only as FICTION. They are deadly when people read fiction and claim it to be fact. If someone hears voices or claims to "see the future", they are in reality con artists or mentally ill.

 

However, in the Greek mythology "Cassandra" is scapegoated and cursed by  the male god Apollo, funny how the god of Abraham makes Eve the scapegoat.

Cassandra was given the "gift" of hearing the future by Apollo. But when she refused his advances he cursed her so that no one would believe her prophecies. So she was doomed to a life a pain knowing the future demise of Troy her own family and even her own demise.

 

EDIT....I just realized what a horrible story this is. Sure it paints Cassandra as the tragic heroine. But where is the real anger in the story that should be aimed at Apollo for being such a fucking dick?

Expecting romance

After dinner and a movie

 

Yet upon her dismissal

A curse upon her

An act of revenge

 

You vile pig

To give freely

Is not to dominate

Or fear rejection

Is the mysogny

Of our male species

 

It assumes

All god/s male

Because of tradition

Of testosterone

 

Where is the anger

At Apollo, at Mohammed

Where is the anger

At that of Jesus

 

If men were

Greater than women

Then why do men

Die as well?

 

I hate this story

Not because of Cassandra

She is

The tragic heroine

 

I hate this story

Because no anger

Is aimed at Apollo

The instigator

 

Just like that

Scapegoating of EVE

In a garden

With a tree

 

Who set it up

Not her

Nor did she

Have knowledge

 

Only predators

And the insecure

Set up traps

For the unaware

With polished brim

Looks down

To make sure his dress shoes are not skuffed

 

He climbs in the driver's seat

Unwilling to see

That he is

Nothing more than a pawn

 

Reaches the gated community

Greats the splinter sect

The party goers

Look forward to the club

 

They climb in

Shouting of joy

In the limo

Of the impending end

 

The champagne of tribalism

Bubbles in crystal glasses

The "chosen"

Are on the way

 

Upon arival

He does his duty

Gets out

And opens their door

 

They file out

In drunken state

To get in line

In velvet ropes

 

He follows them

But to his chagrin

They tell him

He is not welcome

 

"If you want

To join us

You have to rebuke

The god you claim

 

If you chose not to

We thank you for the ride

But sorry limo driver

You are simply not our kind

 

But please take solice

You did get a nation

What is wrong with second place

Thinking they are smart

Thinking they have the answers

Arrive to take the test

 

They take the eye test

Mistaking letters

Trying to spell

Yahweh, God and Allah

 

Then they take

The paper test

Asking how old

The earth is

 

Responding

To upside down triangle

Yellow must mean

"Yield to absurdity"

 

Then the road test

Speeding with fantasy

Cutting of reason

Praying to pass

 

What can the examiner do

But pass you

Otherwise

You'll kill them

 

But if the believer

Thinks

They have a licence

It is not in reality

 

How many people

Do you see

On the road

That make you scream?

 

Get in line

Take a number

The skeptic has seen

Bad logic before

Why mourn
