List of Highlights of the Tubal Interwebs?

I talked a client of mine into getting DSL because in my opinion, you just can't enjoy your computer without decent access to the Internets™.  She's an older lady, a bit hard of hearing due to ringing in her ears.  She's not terribly computer-savvy.   Her interests are quite different from mine, but she's a really nice lady.  I'm pretty sure she's a Christian.  Most people around here are.

I know two of her interests: white German shepherds and gambling.  She won a Corvette at the local Indian casino.  Damn, I'm jealous. Eye-wink

Anyway, here are some Internet attractions I could think of off the top of my head:

  • Google Earth
  • YouTube
  • eBay
  • PayPal
  • Wikipedia
  • Dictionary.com
  • Comedy Central
  • Froogle
  • MySpace

This doesn't even begin to cover it.  Help me out, please.   I think I'm having cerebral flatulence. Eye-wink

Do any of you gamble online?  I'm definitely not a gambler, but I'm wondering if there's a legal, reputable (well, you know) place to do so.  In my opinion, there's no such thing as a reputable gambling casino, but if she likes to do it, it's none of my business.  Perhaps she should stay away from the Internets while gambling.

I know she needs a Firewall and a good anti-virus and maybe Intro into Phishing.  She probably got a Firewall and anti-virus with her new computer.  I've goofed a few times, but for the most part I can usually spot a scam.  I'm not sure how to impress upon her to be careful, but have fun.  Ideas?

Again, I'm having some thinking issues (damn sinusitis). Smiling

If you mean RRS, I don't think she'd appreciate this site very much. If you mean RSS, you're going to have to narrow it down a bit. Smiling

I meant RRS. Yeah. If she's a Christian she may not find this place too uplifting. Surprised

Tell her to stay away from

Tell her to stay away from the porn, ignore any emails from people she doesn't know, and to not let her anti-virus expire.

In most cases PC

In most cases PC manufacturers only include TRIAL versions of Anti-Virus, firewall software, etc. Instead of paying for them, try these out:

Free AVG anti-virus for personal use. GET RID OF mcafee or symantec as they use a lot more system resources than AVG anti-virus.

Spybot Search & Destroy is probably the best free tool out there for getting rid of garbage. (did I mention its free?)

OpenOffice.org is the best alternative to MS office there is (for the price - free) and it will save you a LOAD of cash considering MS office costs a hefty $200 for the basic version (Word, powerpoint, excel). Don't be fooled by the Office icon on a new PC's desktop, it's only a trial version (I'm not kidding)

Get a HARDWARE firewall. They only cost about $50 if you dont want wireless networking and they help keep the geek squad away and out of your wallet. (very easy to set up, for the most part it's plug and play)

I used to work for an evil retail electronics store and thats how things really are. Oh and if you buy a printer, get the USB cable from the 99cent store if you can as you will be grabbing the KY if they sucker you into buying a $20 USB cable that literally costs about 10 cents to make (if that!)

Oh one more thing I forgot

Oh one more thing I forgot to add:

Duke Terry from South Africa does NOT have an enourmous pile of money he wants to send you. He is a Nigerian scam artist salivating at the thought of getting his hands on your bank account to see how quickly he can drain it.

C1@L!$ is not Cialis and V1@G|2A is not Viagra.

H0t $LUt$ in your email will most definitely infect you with something you didn't want and once you are infected it is very difficult to be "cured."

Your financial institution will NEVER ask you to log in and review a new policy etc. If you are unsure, go directly to your financial institutions website and log in yourself, NEVER click the links in the email.

An email from a friend with an attachment that says "I love you" really only wants to screw you (I know that one is old, but I had to)

And if you need a penis enlargement, remember that "Habib Bigshlong" is not a doctor. Seek real medical advice. Sealed

Your god's silence speaks loud and clear

I'm familiar with most of those.  I'm sure I'll be switching her to AVG at some point.  She has a version of Microsoft Works (best. oxymoron. ever.).  I don't think it's trial.

I've tried a lot of Anti-spyware.  I've got lots of different versions and run them every so often...Spybot is on here somewhere...

I  doubt I could talk her into a hardware firewall.  (Don't tell the script kiddies I don't have one either. Eye-wink )

Thanks for the link to the free version of an Office-like product.  I needed something like that for building cheap PCs.   I've usually got one or two in some stage of repair / build in the back room.

Maybe she would enjoy reading the online versions of newspapers. They are more up-to-date and most of them are free. Or internet radio shows. There are tons of different channels for every taste of music. Or she can "watch the music" at YouTube. They have recordings which you can't find anywhere else.
