Idiots who don't know what a "black hole" is accuse man of racism

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.

County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."

Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

This is from about 3 weeks ago. That's sad that someone that ignorant could become a judge or county commissioner.

Yeah, well this is Texas

Yeah, well this is Texas we're talking about. They let an Air National Guard deserter from Connecticut become govnut based on a fundie xtian platform. Oh, and I voted Ann Richards at the time, not that it matters. Oh, and John Wylie Price is known to do whatever he can to get attention; i.e. there is no such thing as bad publicity.

I don't know why "black" is used to describe people

who aren't literally black anyway. Wasn't it African Americans

who chose this label? Or not?

I'm not literally white.

I've got my hand on some white printer paper and

they aren't even close to the same color.

I'm so sick of this black/white label crap for human beings.

Anyway, didn't the negative connotation of "black" come

from religion?

(just a guess without much thought put into it)

Well hopefully Obama can

Well hopefully Obama can break the color barrier for president this election - after all, GWB already broke the retarded barrier.

I think it was just a matter of simplicity - Australian aborigines are "black" and neither African nor American. There are plenty of "black" people who aren't American. Most "African-Americans" have never been to Africa - their ancestors were but if you go back far enough so were everyone else's. Asians aren't yellow either.

It wasn't even regular

It wasn't even regular stupidity - it was incredible stupidity - like lighting a match at your gas tank to see how full it is stupid.

Nik, You ask excellent questions.

To the best of my knowledge, blacks (overall) have preferred the label "black"

as opposed to any number of other things they have been called. I would guess

and say it's possible the negative view of "black" came from religion but if

we really want to pin it down, it would boil down to which human or people

had the original idea of black, white etc. Not sure we can ever know that.

And let me echo your sentiment about being sick(in my case, deathly ill) of the

black/white/red/brown/yellow labels for humans.

Maybe we can excuse people

Maybe we can excuse people for the 1st GWB election - maybe they didn't realize just how stupid and bad he would be. But after his first term you had to be living under a rock to not think he was doing about as bad a job as he possibly could. What the fuck????

Hi Shelley,I agree both

Hi Shelley,

I agree both elections were stupid but now that I think of it, GW wasn't elected the first time and of course he lost the popular vote.... so in my mind it wasn't the peoples fault. I still don't care for the electoral college. Wonder how different things would have been in 2k if the court(s) had ruled otherwise.

Yes, the 2004 election results left me dazed and confused.

I have a pal who was born in

I have a pal who was born in Jamaica (Mon!) and has a fit whenever he's called African-American.

"They left out the middle," he complains. "And it was the best part!"

*****

It's tempting to dismiss the fellow complaining about Black Holes as... how shall I put this... a complete chowderhead.

That's not it, though. This kind of hair-trigger hypersensitivity and ignorant, belligerent tribalism are consequences of racial identity politics.

This isn't to say that members of racial or other minorities don't have legitimate grievances - language issues included -  but the chip on this guy's shoulder indicates programmed, cultivated resentment and paranoia.

Therefore, my parents and sister and all of their church friends must be living under a rock.

I knew there had to be an explanation!

Charlize Theron is African American considering she was born in South Africa.

Aren't we all African if we go back far enough?

Wow,

Yeah, I know three African-Americans who hate, and I MEAN H*A*T*E,  being called

"African-Americans". Yet they call each other the N-word all the time.

It's funny, to me.

***EDIT***  By the way, as you can see from my pic I'm clearly multi-racial.
