Scientology Protests round 2 - March 15, 2008

Copyrights exist to protect an artist's profits, right? So why does a non-profit "church" need to hold and defend copyrights? Good question...

For anyone who is interested, another round of protests is planned for March 15th (sadly, overlapping with St. Patrick's Day this year... evidentally god spoke to the pope about this important matter and had him change it.) Groups will be meeting up to protest and draw attention to Scientology's tax-exempt status and underhanded tactics of blackmail, harassment, lies, and brainwashing.

Information can be had here: http://forums.enturbulation.org/

If you agree that people should know about Scientology's misbehavior, please attend and add your voice. If you agree that Scientology should not have tax-exemption because they are for-profit, please attend and add your voice.

Not defending Scientiolgy

Not defending Scientiolgy here, but copyrights are to give distribution rights to the producer of a work. So an organization like Scientology could copyright its "bible" so that others can't change it. Profit is only part of the picture.

Haven't there been attempts to go after Scientology's tax exempt status before? Again, no defense of Scientology (they're freaking nuts), but not-for-profit only means there are restrictions on how excess income for organization is re-distributed. You can't have things like share holders, dividends and stuff. Some orgaizations play fast and loose with the rules and get in trouble. I wouldn't be surprised if Scientology is one of them

Just wanted to publicly agree with the notion of speaking up against Scientology and having their tax status removed.

Maybe they could organize phone calls to the right govt agencies to have investigations, because I don't think the protests alone are gonna make it happen.
