I wanted to add to Sapient's description about Deludedgod, that he is also extremely knowledgeable, as is obvious by his essays, on molecular biochemistry.
In this day and age it is not only important to understand how genes function in order to understand evolution, but to understand the mechanisms and the machinery of the phenotypes of those genes. Genes are ancient, it's the machinery of the organism that needs to be understood in order to answer questions regarding evolution. I highly recommend everyone read Deludedgod's posts.
