Spirituality Produces Moments of Pure Dumb

Man axes wife for 'lucky' foetus

Posted Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:05pm AEDT

A Laotian man has told police he murdered his pregnant wife with an axe because he wanted the foetus to make a lucky charm which might encourage spirits to help him win the lottery, a report said.

The 38-year-old was arrested a day after allegedly luring his wife, aged 24, into the forest of north-eastern Xieng Khuang province on January 3 and killing her with an axe blow to the back, the Vientiane Times reported.

It said the foetus had not been found.

Police told the state-linked newspaper that the man confessed he planned to use the three-month old foetus to produce a "louk lord", a mystical object which, according to local legend, can give its owner great power and fortune.

"The murderer confessed to the terrible crime, but he won't explain where the body of his unborn child is," Major Khamsouk Phonkhamdy, chief provincial police investigator, was quoted as saying.

The suspect said he had heard that if he "produced a 'louk lord' he would be able to ask the ghosts for lucky lottery numbers," Major Khamsouk added.

"Or he could sell the 'louk lord' at an extremely high price."

The investigator reportedly said it was unclear whether the killer worked alone or had accomplices who were still trying to produce the "louk lord".

Laos is one of Asia's poorest countries. While most people are Buddhists, belief in spirits remains widespread.

 This is evolution in

This is evolution in action.  This guy is obviously to stupid to propagate his DNA.  Sad really, a story like this puts things in perspective.  What's the harm in a little superstitious nonsense?

This is kinda funny to me (not the lost of life of course) but, because I just had a conversation with a nurse about Spirituality, I think of ghost and stupidity whenever I hear the word spirituality, I hear it all the time "well I'm not religious, but I'm spiritual" - WTF is exactly what I'm thinking.

Signature ? How ?

Yeah, Ken.

I think spirituality is complete bunk. It should be called what it is. Imagination.

Yeah, the whole "I am religious and not spiritual" tag is generally a load of nonsense.

That is usually done by theistic people that have almost gotten over the poison of dogmatic absolutist religion, but just can not come to terms with the fact that there might not be some "ultimate purpose" where they are the center of the universe and their "higher power" is doing everything for them.

Spirituality generally encompasses the belief of ' I don't know what God is but I know that HE is (a contradiction right there) and wants what is best for all of us. God wants us all to get along."

Hmm, funny how that broad and all inclusive definition of god starts narrowing when these types of people start talking. Their mysterious force starts to take on all sorts of attributes and human causation that lines up with what THEY think.

Alot of these types of terms have caught on real well in stuff like 12 Step Groups that tell you that you can not get better on your own, you have to have some "higher power" that has to solve everything for you. ( They try to cop out of any religious tag by claiming that it can be anything that you wish it to be). Funny, the higher power, the force, the all-loving Goddess or whatever vague term they wish to assign to god/goddess always lines up with their own personal morals and codes.

I think self pity is the root of all evil when it comes to justifications.  Be it for alcoholism, smoking, obesity... everyone's a freaking baby.

 That little poem changed

That little poem changed my life, I used to be very self centered and depressed in my mid to late teens.  Now I'm just self centered but no longer depressed.  Smiling

'Self Pity' is like a punch to the nutsack.  It sort of made me ask, WTF? why am I so freaking special and why am I wallowing in self pity? It was about that time that I changed from being a theist agnostic to being an atheist.  It was among the same lines... ask myself WTF? For some reason I associate religion, laziness and overall negative emotion with self pity.  It's like my own personal 'Satan'.  Often when I see the poor me stories on TV, and I don't mean the ones narrated in third person, I mean all those obese fucks that cry 'I just can't help myself, I have to eat 20 burgers a day' I think... self fucking pity.  Go join a cult or a religion and perhaps god can help you because you're so fucking special.

Don't get me wrong I still have pity for the genuinely unfortunate, I'm just desensitised to people's excuses and bullshit.

/rant, see sig for response to my post... I really should drink more often I'm so freaking witty.

Its funny how Muslims, Jews

Its funny how Muslims, Jews and Christians would rightfully agree that this guy is nuts, but think their own wars where children die as collateral damage, is fine.

Death to your neighbor makes you insane. Death in war makes you a hero.
