the mist (movie)

warning spoilers.

So today my girlfriend and I decided to see this movie today, they had it on campus for two bucks so i was like "what the hell." Now I have seen trailers for this movie before, I thought i was just going to be a knock off of the movie the fog. Man was I wrong. The idea of this movie is that this town's branch of the army opened up a gate to another realm and the creatures of that realm are in this mist and they attack and kill and these people are trapped in a store. But that is not the scary part. There is a lady played by Marcia Gay Harden and she refers to this as the end times. She starts preaching the gospel, turning people into sheep (not literally) down the line when they realize theres not much hope. Now normally I'd just be like "whatever, i hope they all die" but the way these people acted in such an irrational, uncivilized form, literally made me sick to my stomach. Honestly I can't even put it into words it's one of those you have to see to believe and it just really reminded me how dangerous religion truly is.

*SPOILER* Don't read past if you haven't seen the movie and don't want it ruined.

I LOVED it when that guy pumped two rounds into that bitch. I cheered loudly and so did the rest of the theater. The whole time I wanted to just bludgen her to death with something like those pole stands at the bank that hold up the red velvet ropes in the que. I couldn't stand her, but it is a good example of what kind of bullshit people will do if they think there's no hope except for in their god and when they're listening to a wacko.

Reason has always been a part of religion, ever since two nudists took dietary advice from a talking snake....

I saw the movie yesterday

I saw the movie yesterday and remembered this thread about it.(Ya we get our movies awhile after America)

The religion aspect was definetly a prominent part of it. That woman literally makes you sick.I suppose people could easily think they were over-exagerating the religious nut bit, but the scary thing is I've known a few people just that crazy. Even if it isn't it's main purpose, the movie definetly gives a stark reminder on the danger and insanity of fundamentalism. To be honest, I'm surprised there was't some christian uproar over the whole thing, or maybe they know it's true. The christian character had the entire cinema hating her, but as far as I can say she was pretty much just following what the bible says.Wonder what that tells you?

I wouldn't say it's a must see atheist movie, as that realy isn't it's main focus. However, if you have some christian friends you want to rile or challenge to look at their beliefs might be interesting to watch it with them.

I'm pretty sure Stephen King

I'm pretty sure Stephen King is an atheist. I rember hearing it and I notice in a lot of his books the very religious people are either the "bad guys" or extremely stupid. They tend to take that out or tone it down in the movies (they usually change his movies so much they barely resemble the books.) Read the story, didn't see the movie.

King's no atheist.  He's

King's no atheist.  He's very critical of organized religion, but he's got something of a spiritual bent that he doesn't take particularly seriously.   There are just as many supernatural forces for good as for evil in his stories.  He's got some damn fine yarns, though.  If you want a true atheist horror writer, go for old H. bloody P. bloody Love bloody craft.

I've read pretty much

I've read pretty much Lovecraft. His stories are often extremely bizarre. Too bad he didn't live longer - imagine what he could have written living into the nuclear age.

The Ending

** Spoiler **

The ending has prevented me from recommending this to alot of people.

I watched it with a couple of friends and while they cheered the "religion can be destructive" message, they were genuinely disturbed by the last two minutes.

In trying to find meaning here, I concluded several things:

One being, that while humans can survive just fine w/o faith... they tend not to do so well without... hope.

Anyone else have thoughts on the ending..message, whatever  ?

 SPOILERS***Yes,even though

 SPOILERS***

Yes,even though I say the ending coming, it was really bleak. From when he started killing them, I knew they would get rescued shortly after. It was a bitter/ironic way to end it. I think we are so used to the typical hollywood 'happy ending',we don't know what to do when the hero comes off the worst. Still, even though I expected that ending,it was still really depressing.I left the cinema feeling pretty morbid and a little cheated. But no one said life is fair, and maybe it's time movies reflect that.

I was looking up Stephen

I was looking up Stephen King's thoughts on religion and this one came up. I always find comments entertaining:

yeah. I didn't like the

yeah. I didn't like the ending so much but when that bitch got hers I remember everyone clapped and some (myself included) even laughed a little. Violence sucks and all, but she REALLY deserved it.

Yeah, I think everyone who saw that movie worldwide cheered when she got blasted.

I thought the movie was ok though.  the first 3/4 of it was kind of boring and mediocre, but the last 20 minutes or so what just like, "What the fuck??"  It was entertaining, which can be said of most Stephen King adaptations (1408 was very entertaining as well).

I wouldn't consider Lovecraft to be an atheist writer.  I mean, I'm pretty sure he was an atheist (certainly a nihilist at least), but his Cthulu mythos is anything but atheistic.

One of the top 2 or 3 horror writers of all time, though?   Without question.
