In myspace, I had written a blog a while ago about zionism. In it, I discussed how religious absolutism has been reframed as the desire for a "home." Instead of viewing the planet generally as a dwelling place, people groups have this overblown desire to call a specific stretch of land "theirs" as if ownership is even legitimate about pieces of rock that have been there for millions of years before we came to be and will be there millions of years after we are all dead and gone. But then again, as soon as "god" is brought into an argument, any pretense of rationality has been cast out anyway.
What brings this up is a recent poll done by Zogby (http://www.cnionline.org/learn/polls/czandlobby/) in which 62% of those polled believe, in varying degrees, with the idea of Zionism when it is phrased as "Israel must have all of the promised land, including Jerusalem, to facilitate the second coming of the messiah."
Now, for those who haven't studied the Bible, all that land would include the entire West Bank, parts of Lebanon and more besides. This is not conducive towards peace, but then again, Armageddon isn't about gathering together and eating ice cream.
This is absurd. We live in a world in which nuclear holocaust is a very real possibility and 62% of Americans believe that Israel should have all the land that was promised to them in their own created mythology. Foreign policy is being created and implemented on the basis of myths, dreams and hocus pocus.
Accuse me of being anti-semitic or just plain acerbic, but when there is over a million cluster bombs still lying around in the land of Lebanon, waiting for the innocent child or other civilian to accidentally uncover it, I begin to get a little upset that the nation who put those bombs there, Israel, isn't being held to account. Add into the equation the fact that belief follows voting practice and you have an administration that has been supported in its policies resulting in the deaths of 100,000 Iraqis, in no small part due to the belief that war in the middle east is a harbringer of the "end of days." The end product is death and destruction and the American people are busy wondering when the cosmic bully is going to appear in clouds to send millions of people to die in their own personal holocaust!
