How many of you play golf? (and my own brief golf story)

When I was younger I was a professional golf hopeful.  Of the roughly 30 matches I played in my high school career I was undefeated, and my first job out of school was at a well known golf learning center in my area.  This was the job that got me through the first year or two of my sons life, forgoing the end of college so that I could earn a living to support my little man.  I recognized around that time frame that if I were to be a golfer on any pro tour I would need to practice everyday in place of a career or family, and just accepted that turning pro would be too tough of a feat.  I dramatically reduced the amount of golf I played due to it's expense, and concentrated much more on work.  When I was 16 I was able to play 200-350 rounds of golf per year, by 25 I was lucky if I played twice per year.

Just recently Kelly has taken an interest in golf.  We hit the course recently and she was impressed.  I still have the muscle memory from childhood and shot 3 over par.  Kelly is so flexible and athletic that she shows natural ability, but like any new golfer needs a bit of practice before developing a level of consistency.  My son reminds me of myself, he is a natural and at a young age can really wallop the ball, I'm sure he'll end up being quite a golfer himself as his muscles develop.  My father, anonymous house investor, and close companions are always urging me to get outdoors, get some exercise, spend time with Kelly and my son away from the home, and we're all very content with the idea of playing a round of golf every few weeks to enjoy some family time together.

When I was younger I had a whole fleet of folks that I'd play golf with.  My father was a member at a country club and there would always be two adults looking to play with us.  Now, ten years removed from that era, and in a career that would freak out many of the jews I once played with, I'm out of the golf companion loop.  I thought, I wonder if there are members of this community that would like to play a round with Kelly and I at some point.  If you're a golfer and want to spend 4 hours with us out in the open, and can play in the Philadelphia area we'd be interested in taking you up on it.  Especially if you're willing to cover our greens fees. (we'll buy the drinks on the 19th hole)

Aside from looking for the next atheist hopeful willing to play me in a $1 per hole match (I'll give you strokes), who plays golf here?  How often?  How good?  Any good golf stories?  (I'll save some of mine for later)

If Tracy and I are ever in

If Tracy and I are ever in the PA area, I will take you up on that! I will drive the cart as that seems to be what I am best suited for (that and handing out beer) and trust me when I say I am better at the cart, no one likes waiting for 15-17 strokes on a 5 par hole....

When you hit the course on a day that is an "off" day you are welcomed by little to no wait, the course almost to yourself and a quiet that can not be explained. Most of the courses around here are "okay" as far as landscaping/trees but there are some beautiful courses out your way!

Enjoy and embrace this as a fantastic family tradition!

Been a caddy

When I was a young kid,I used too caddy at "Melrose and Ashton" country clubs and Tuesday's was us caddies day to play. And when I lived in Florida back in the 80's,I was a greens keeper for one of these really uppity golf course next to Palm Beach. But now I couldn't even make it too the first Hole,so instead I'll catch a little of it on the Boob Tube, and just last week on Book TV, this guy was talking about his new book "The Down Hill Lie"it sounded pretty funny.

I'm one of those natural

I'm one of those natural golfers that annoy golfers who practice.  I play twice a year at most, and I average 90.  I've never played more than five or six rounds a year.  I admit I'm terrible, but I manage to play bogey golf.  Next time I'm up, you can stoke your ego by beating me.

Depending on how often I get

Depending on how often I get to play, and each year has been different, I routinely score 75 (good times) and 82 not so good.

I am not the golfer in my family though. That distinction belongs to my father who won the state championship when in high school (very small school) at the age of 16. That victory was also prior to the decision to break smaller schools off into separate classes.

Had he not become a full-fledged scientist and professor, he would have done quite well in pro golf.

Age 13 - I use to hit those

Age 13 - I use to hit those plastic hollow golf like balls, with the holes in them, over telephone pole wires by the hundreds per day. Whiffle balls !  .... Hit a real hole in one at a 9 hole course ! Ain't golfed since .... for 44 years, but my brother is addicted.

My out door favorite exorcise thing is, Sea Doos , water bikes, H2O .... easy fun for the old and young alike ....

Re: Golfing with Sapient

Where were you? Torresdale County Club or Philmont. Way more Jews at Philmont where I'm soon to be a member (family membership). Although never played, I'd nail a bucket of balls 250-300 yards with a stock driver. Beat my buddies that play and never sliced one. Go figure. I could use a lesson or two. Philmont has 2 courses, maybe I could hook you guys up as a guest? Haven't seen you in a year Kelly but hi-it's Ron from  Columbus blvdSmiling Let me know if any of you get this. Stay rational!!

We play the local public circuit.  As you know both of those courses are private.

Yes Philmont is one of the local jew clubs.  Torresdale is a WASP club.  Gotta love country club segregation.  If I were to join a course nowadays it would be one that admitted all races, religions, and creeds.  As far as I'm concerned Commonwealth is the top of the line non-segregating club.  Other top notch non-segregating clubs are Hartefeld and Blue Bell.

But you've never actually played a course?

If you're covering our fees, we'd gladly play Philmont with you.  I played Philmont at least 20 times as a teen.  It's a nice course.

Sounds like a good idea

I like this idea a lot, and even as a former Jew I won't have a problem with it at all.  I live in your area Brian, in South Jersey.  I'm a terrible golfer, but I do like to play, except that I'm left-handed and a crackhead stole my clubs and pawned them in Philly, and then I had my ACL replaced, so I need to rehab a bit before hitting the links again (I should be good to go in Spring 2009).  I also need to replace my bag and a few of the clubs, so if you have any ideas on good deals on used lefty clubs I'm all ears.

I have little poignant or anecdotal to share in this space, but I'm glad I wrote something that made someone like you waste their time reading it. HAVE SOME.

That sucks, I wonder if he "scored" well with them.  Sticking out tongue

You and Tiger Woods.

I have a really good connection in the Willow Grove area of Montgomery County for clubs, remind me or bump this thread when the time is right and I'll be able to come up with a deal to get you clubs at cost.  We can play on the same day, or at least hit the range.
