Sahelanthropus tchadensis

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahelanthropus

The current thinking is that chimps and humans split around 5 to 7 million years ago yet this thing is dated at 7 million years ago.

Based on the dates, my hunch is that it's an earlier split that died off.

What do you guys and gals think?

It's not a sudden thing.

It's not a sudden thing.  It would have happened over time, gradual changes between the species.  Some traits would have kept going, others would have regressed.  This would have happened many times over many generations before it stuck.  Even today there's some form of regression, just look at how hairy I am or how stupid fundies are.

That's the thing about evolution that many creationists can't grasp ... it's random, not guided.

Organised religion is the ultimate form of blasphemy.
