Unequivocally they are a despicable lot
More than anything, I think it's a shame that the Phelps family is still getting any attention at all.
They started the pickets at the funerals of soldiers when the press stopped covering their protests of gays. They had to pick something outrageous so the press would come back.
I guarantee that if the press disappeared, they'd find something even more offensive to protest just to get back into the news.

Ah, I still remember when I was Fred Phelps in a play last year... The show was great and emtionally moving, but we had to edit so much out of his hate speech because it was innapropriate for a high school audience. The man is despicable.
What play was that? The only play I'm familiar with that has ol' Fred in it is "The Laramie Project".
Sadly, it's another example of Fred getting attention, though.
I wonder what Fred & family will do for attention if/when we ever bring the troops home.

I just finished watching the YouTube vids on the BBC documentary.
What people need to understand is that Shirly Phelps was able to back up everything they did with scripture. And the way they get around the "cherry-picking" of the scripture is that they truely believe that they are doing a kind act by picketing the funerals. As Shirley and her daughters explained, they are warning people about God's wrath and to bring them back to obedience to god so they can live in peace.
The most twisted thing about them, and there are several things, is that they find glory and rapturous delight whenever they learn about another dead soldier. Why? Because the bible says we must delight in god's punishments.
With that, I'm reminded of a verse in Obediah that reads that we rejoice when the "little ones are dashed up against the rocks."

Maybe if someone just follows them around with a fake camera they'll think they are getting air time so they won't do anything else? Of course we'd have to figure out a way to get them to stop watching TV first. Anything in the bible we can use? Idol? Eye Cancer?
