Thiests a Nuisance to Human Race?

Recently my school's myspace board has a thread in it debating Christianity and God. I went on to say a whole lot, but I said something pretty strong.

Quote:
Primitive religious folk that don't wish to embrace these changes and discoveries are only a nuisance to the human race. That's a really big statement right there, I know.

Someone called me a Nazi due to this, but in a way I totally stand behind what I said. If it weren't for thiests and christianity we would be much farther along in terms of discoveries and technology. Maybe we wouldn't be struggling with Cancer, and other diseases. Maybe we could of had flying cars by now.

The Catholic Church is the who tried to cover up Copernicus's findings; banned his books. Which is a reason for my earlier statement. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong board.

Was I wrong for saying this? And do you agree to an extent?

Whoever called you a Nazi, doesn't know what a national socialist is.

At any rate, what you said, while not PC (and who give's a fuck about that) is not wrong. It's your opinion. It is quite easy to make the argument that religion and the religious hold back human progress - I've made arguments along those lines several times. While I didn't go so far as to call them a "nuisance", I do understand the sentiment.

But look, you didn't call for the extermination or imprisonment or punishment of such people, right? You merely said, "I think these twits are fucking it up for all of us" - and, truth be told, I think they are too. It's really is not any worse than saying Republicans or Democrats are ruining the country or the world. You expressed an opinion, and because it involved religion, people took it personally. Tell them to get over it.

I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world. - Richard Dawkins

What's holding back

What's holding back society?

The idea of society. We are not one. We are many.

Every body is different, and one person is not the other.

Most are self centred, and strive for own goals.

Some selfless, and devote their souls to enriching the lives of others.

Some do this and some do that.

Therefore, a person could belong to a theist sect yet toil day and night in the interest of furthering mankind.

And a scientist who is paid a king's ransom in salary every week, could in fact waste time and resources researching how to make non smudging lip stick.

Thus. To each his own, and to all, nothing.

Perhaps on day a common unity will be formed, with each member of mankind working in relative peace, utilising our strengths to destroy unessential weakness.

 But good luck with that.

Fear denies Faith

I don't think theists in and

I don't think theists in and of themselves can do anything to hamper our species' social and technological progression. It's when they're organized, well funded, and trying to convert the world to their beliefs that you have a problem.

Sort of ...

I partially agree with you. Anytime a mind closes, and questions aren't allowed, growth stagnates. Many religions are like this. Authoritiarian, don't question, I am right because I'm a rich white man who heads this church. I'll never forget my ex-husband's discussions about growing up Lutheran. He tried to ask his minister honest questions to clarify the beliefs of the church. In EVERY case he was shot down, told not to question, and this totally turned him off to organized religion. Their loss.

But then putting all religious people into one basket isn't necessarily accurate either. I do know some religious people who thrive on questions, and are open to other ideas. I happen to lean in your direction, but my rational mind disagrees. LOL
