Atheist, please answer this simple question...

What has Atheism contributed to the world, that is unique to Atheism, would have been impossible without Atheism, and has made the world a better place?

(Note: I'm asking about things on earth.  Getting to go to heaven doesn't happen in this world.)

I'm probably not going to respond.  I'll leave that to other members.  I'm really just interested in collecting a list of answers.  I have no alterior motive......... at all. Smiling

Thanks.

Heh.  I'm just interested as to how exactly this thread would go.

The question makes no

The question makes no sense. You should have asked what has atheism done for heaven that can't be duplicated by Christianity. Nothing worldy counts.

Nothing. And, unlike theism, it was able to do it without a god.

I've got it....

I've got it....

All the great dead baby jokes:

http://www.skrause.org/humor/deadbaby.shtml

No way a theist could ever come up with these.

(this was meant as a pseudo-joke, I by no means endorse 'dead baby' jokes, unless you are into that kind of thing, then they are pretty funny..... anyway..... on with the show)

I think the qualifications,

I think the qualifications, "is unique to atheism, would have been impossible without atheism"
make this an impossible thing to fulfill.
Anything that is possible with theism is possible without it, and vice-versa.

Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.

The simple answer is nothing, since Heaven doesn't exist.

What's so difficult about

What's so difficult about this?

Atheism is not a religion, nor a political philosophy, nor a committee, nor even a belief!  Since it is none of these things, it couldn't possibly make claims about what it contributes.  In fact, it makes no claims whatsoever!  It is simply a state of non-acceptance of someone else's claim.

Why would anyone expect it to contribute something?

The answer, therefore, is:

NOTHING.

I love simple questions!

Are not most actions and thoughts without God?

I often say that when you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind.

Not impossible to fill! I just did it. Nothing. That's the answer. It really is a simple question. The OP is correct.

This has been a great exercise in not answering what you think is the implied conclusion to a simple question. I wish it had been as simple in my thread. Seems those pesky theists are determined not to answer my question for some reason, even though it's identical to this one.

I love this post, actually. Even though it was meant to be tongue in cheek (I think), it's done a great job of illustrating that my question was perfectly valid, and has a perfectly valid answer.

Can everyone see the danger in this question? If you try to figure out the "conclusion" you'll start twitching and twisting, trying to defend against the next point, when in reality, answering the question honestly leads to the truth.

This is how science works. You answer the questions. When you're done, you see what the conclusion is. If you start trying to avoid a conclusion by changing your answer ahead of time, you're not doing science anymore.

Heh. Yes, it was kind of tongue and cheek.

However.. in order to add to my tongue and cheek :P-- [cough], um, I'd like to reformulate the question in light of this:

Quote:

Alright.. What has anything contributed to the world, that is unique to it, would have been impossible without it, and has made the world a better place?

I think this might better represent the ridiculous-ness of the question better. Smiling

I think this guy has the right idea

Quote:
I think the qualifications, "is unique to [X], would have been impossible without [X]"
make this an impossible thing to fulfill.
Anything that is possible with [X] is possible without [X], and vice-versa.

If one could make a moral case for genocide, I'd go after the makers of that swill they call Miller Lite.

I dont think the terrorists in the Mildde East hate freedom or Christians, I think the real reason they attack us is because we offend Allah with that swill.

The Quran talks about rivers of wine running in heaven. I doubt very seriously it is Mad Dog 20/20. Those people makers of MD should be gassed along with the makers of Miller Lite.

There might be hope for you yet, Rhad.

You're so close to getting it, but I'm not going to tell you.  Hopefully one day you'll make the connection yourself.
