Alarmism or Accurate Prediction ? Expert says humans will be extinct in 100 years.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-education/frank-fenner-sees-no-hope-for-humans/story-e6frgcjx-1225880091722Frank Fenner sees no hope for humans

FRANK Fenner doesn't engage in the skirmishes of the climate wars. To him, the evidence of global warming is in. Our fate is sealed.

"We're going to become extinct," the eminent scientist says. "Whatever we do now is too late."

Fenner is an authority on extinction. The emeritus professor in microbiology at the Australian National University played a leading role in sending one species into oblivion: the variola virus that causes smallpox.

Another excerpt:

"Homo sapiens will become extinct, perhaps within 100 years," he says. "A lot of other animals will, too. It's an irreversible situation. I think it's too late. I try not to express that because people are trying to do something, but they keep putting it off.Mitigation would slow things down a bit, but there are too many people here already"

(The rest of the article can be found at the link. I am not as educated about climate change as some of the other members on here and wish that I had studied a little more about it, when I first heard about it. I know the article is a couple of years old, but figured the members on here that know a lot more about climate change than I, could provide some feedback about this).

“It is proof of a base and low mind for one to wish to think with the masses or majority, merely because the majority is the majority. Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people.”

 As usual he fails to

As usual he fails to explain exactly how we are all going to die and will conveniently be dead long before his prediction is proven wrong. I go with alarmist/smart retirement plan promoting his next book.

Edit: Oh, this story is a little dated, Frank Fenner is already dead.

If, if a white man puts his arm around me voluntarily, that's brotherhood. But if you - if you hold a gun on him and make him embrace me and pretend to be friendly or brotherly toward me, then that's not brotherhood, that's hypocrisy.- Malcolm X

I was leaning in that direction as well.

As I previously stated, I don't know jack shit about climate change or global warming. But, I have heard articles along these lines since I was a kid. Somebody posted this on another board that I occasionally visit and a lot of people were saying the dude's credentials were proof enough that he knew what he was talking about. But, I have never been one to automatically buy into something because of credentials.

I thought it was rather contradictory that he noticed the rabbit population in Australia that almost got wiped out, evolved and made a comeback in numbers and offered that as evidence that it was too late for us. But, since I don't know a lot about the subject, I thought I would post it over here and see what everyone thought, as I have a tendency to frequent this board all of the time and hardly ever visit any other.

I'd rather have feedback on here than I had anywhere else. The eclectic and educated mix keeps me fairly informed on almost any type of scientific, philosophical or political issue.

to me, it just looks like a

to me, it just looks like a dressed-up, more respectable, "scientific" version of predicting armageddon for a certain date.  it definitely got him in the papers, didn't it?

"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

reminds me of the brilliant

reminds me of the brilliant south park episode on global warming.  i can just imagine thousands of people clogging up the highways after reading this article, screaming, "we didn't listen!  WE DIDN'T LISTEN!!!" out their car windows.
