Farthest Ever View of the Universe Assembled by Combining 10 Years of NASA Hubble Space Telescope Photographs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) — Like photographers assembling a portfolio of best shots, astronomers have assembled a new, improved portrait of humankind's deepest-ever view of the universe.

Called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, the photo was assembled by combining 10 years of NASA Hubble Space Telescope photographs taken of a patch of sky at the center of the original Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The XDF is a small fraction of the angular diameter of the full Moon.

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is an image of a small area of space in the constellation Fornax, created using Hubble Space Telescope data from 2003 and 2004. By collecting faint light over many hours of observation, it revealed thousands of galaxies, both nearby and very distant, making it the deepest image of the universe ever taken at that time.

At the end of the article a web event tomorrow

The public is invited to participate in a "Meet the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field Observing Team" webinar, in which three key astronomers of the XDF observing team will describe how key astronomers of the XDF observing team will describe how they assembled the landmark image and explain what it tells us about the evolving universe. Participants are invited to send in questions for the panel of experts to discuss. The webinar will be broadcast at 1:00 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, September 27, 2012. To participate in the webinar, please visit: http://hubblesite.org/go/xdf/

Vaset, I have to thank you

Vaset, I have to thank you once again for making a post that inspired another poem. Go to the last page of my poetry thread and read "Flicker", it was inspired by this post.

While the meme of humility Sagan expressed in his comments of the photo of the earth viewed through the rings of Saturn, this is yet another nail in the coffen of superstition. It also constantantly reminds me of our species skeptics and progressives in the past, even before all this modern technology, like MacBeth act 5 scene 5 "fury of atctivity", and the skepticism of Epicurus. It confirms my position that questioning is the only way to progress. And how anyone looking at that photo thinks we are special has got to be out of their fucking mind.

One can only be humble and feel lucky in such vastness and natural hostility. Thanks Vaset.

No problem. I could stare at

No problem. I could stare at that pic for hours. I did actually. Could only pick out two stars (in my lack of expertise, I may be wrong). Everything else, including all those white pixels in the background, is a galaxy. To think that this is what we'd see if we had super vision and looked in just one piece of sky less than half the size of the full moon. Then to think of the entire sky.

"FUCKING HUGE" is an understatement and doesn't even come close to describe the size of the universe.
