Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert plan D.C. rallies

Oct. 30: "Rally to Restore Sanity," "March to Keep Fear Alive"

On Thursday's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," the host announced plans to hold an event against extremism in Washington D.C. called "Rally to Restore Sanity."

"See you October 30 on the National Mall to spread the timeless message, 'Take it down a notch for America,'" he said. "A million Moderate march, where we take to the streets to send a message to our leaders and our national media that says, 'We are here! We... are only here until six though, because we have a sitter.'"

Not to be outdone, Stephen Colbert announced on his Comedy Central show, which airs directly after Stewart's, that he was throwing a competing rally: "March to Keep Fear Alive."

"Now is not the time to take it down a notch. Now is the time for all good men to freak out for freedom," Colbert said.

Both rallies already have Web sites.

Reads the "Rally to Restore Sanity" site: "We're looking for the people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn't be the only ones that get heard."

Colbert's "March to Keep Fear Alive site" says, "Never forget -- 'Reason' is just one letter away from 'Treason.' Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but American can't afford to take that chance."

The news comes just three weeks after Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally on D.C.'s national mall, which coincided with the 48th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

The problem with events like

The problem with events like this .....is that every Wingnut on the far left and far right think they are reasonable.... Every douche bag with a "Save the Whales" sign or a bogus picture of Obamas African birth certificate will show up.... a bunch of argumentative, psuedo-pontiffs so busy educating the masses from their soap boxes that they never stop to listen to reasonable assertions which may, or may not coincide with their astigmatic presumptions......

These days, its not enough to have a valid point of view... you have to humiliate and embarrass those with an oppossing view...

Still... Jane & I might go... it looks like it could be fun.

OK Rich, you do realize that you have, in fact, hit on one of the major points to showing up to this, right?

Most of the people there will be in on the deal.  We will all look at the idiots and smile.  Heck but I may even join in with one or two groups for a few minutes to do some insane ranting just so that I can turn the tables on them as soon as I get their confidence.

Enter Public Citizen's "What Sign Should I Bring to Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity?" contest.

Your slogan could be seen up and down the National Mall on October 30!

More than 100,000 people have already committed to attend.

Stewart characterizes the rally as a "call to reasonableness" and a gathering of the "busy majority" who eschew sloganeering and extremism. He seems particularly concerned about people bringing over-the-top or mean-spirited signs to the event.

Public Citizen plans to distribute signs at the rally to promote our message of fighting corporate power and holding government accountable to the people. What could be more reasonable?

Submit as many slogan suggestions as you can come up with. Have fun. Be clever. Be a good speller.

P.S. Spread the word.

But it seems like a great opportunity to be a butt head.

"Restore Sanity: Lobotomize Your Senator"

"Sanity Restored, All Systems Go"

"Sanity is not the same as washing your hands"

"If I were sane, would I be here?"

"Reboot --- sanity restored"

"Sanity not restored - the dog ate my tape backup"

-- I feel so much better since I stopped trying to believe.

"We are entitled to our own opinions. We're not entitled to our own facts"- Al Franken

I don't understand any

I don't understand any objections, if there are in this thread, to these "marches". These two are rightfully mocking the Limpdick class that uses fear to distract people from the fact that the wealthiest 2% are raping our economy, by selling utopia bullshit. They are exposing the theocratic fear mongering of the right and party of "no".

Stewart and Colbert are exactly what this country needs. Someone to stand up to bullshit and make fun of bullshit.
