Pope's minion blams atheists for the Nazis.

This ashat needs a global response. If anyone can find a link or e-mail to send to their church or to the vatican, It would be greatly apreciated.

Here is the letter I sent

Here is the letter I sent them,

Dear Sirs,   The SS Nazis had imbossed on their belt buckles "God is with us". They were not atheists. And for a church to condone the theft of Jewish money to be held Switzerland, is hypocritical.   I am not a fascist anymore than all Catholics are inquisitors. Italy is a westernized country as is where I am from in America. OUR biggest allie is the U.K. which is a majority atheist.   So once again, your church condones bigotry and promotes it by demonizing anyone who holds a different belief. I would suggest that you stop playing the moral cop of those outside your club. Your Pope is not my king or a god and to say you want peace, and then promote the demonization of others is far from promoting peace.   Just as Allah doesn't own you like property, YOU do not own me. I am a human being, not a monster, and I do not apreciate your falacious remarks about people you have never met or debated.   Thomas Jefferson was the author of our First Amendment and valued freedom and free speech. Since he equated the birth and death of Jesus as being the same catigory as Minerva being born out of the brain of Jupiter, I guess that would make him a Nazi too. He was not an atheist, but he certainly didn't believe in magic, and he would not value anyone who makes naked assertions without backing up what they claim.   Saying that every atheist is bad, is like saying every person who has a mustache must be a Nazi because Hitler had one too.   I hope every Italian atheist is standing up to your hypocritical bigotry and I hope they don't stop speaking out untill you apologize.   We are not Hitler and no westernized atheist I know would condone such barbaric behaivor Hitler caused.

The best refutation of this

The best refutation of this claim is to cite Martin Luther's "On The Jews and Their Lies"

"God" burns Anne Frank eternally. For that, theists call him 'good.'

"Without God, everything is

"Without God, everything is permitted."

With this famous quote from Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the bishop of the southern Bavarian town of Augsburg wanted to warn his congregation of what he sees as the dangers of atheism.

Bishop Mixa told churchgoers that a society without God was "hell on earth" and could result in bloody regimes such as those led by Adolf Hitler or the Soviet Union.

"Decades past have proven the inhumanity of atheism through the godless regimes of National Socialism and communism, with their penal camps, secret police and mass murder," he said.

"Wherever God is denied or fought against, there, humans and their dignity will also be denied and violated," he added.

There are perfect examples of peaceful socialist societies where God is largely denied and are not "hell on earth".

Fail.

Nobody I know was brainwashed into being an atheist.

Why Believe?

I'll add a second "fail": people who continue to use that quote show their illiteracy. Dostoyevsky never wrote that in The Brothers Karamazov. It's certainly something that the character Ivan might say, but the fact that he never actually says it is significant. Oh, also the character of Ivan is insane by the end of the book. Yeah.

I mean, fuck -- it's a good book, why not read it or something? Too busy making up crazy shit, bishop?

PS - I found an article saying the same thing!

Just as a matter of

Just as a matter of clarification: This was the same man who served in the Hitler Jugend?

"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. It is preposterous to assert that the process of systematic scientific reasoning arbitrarily excludes “non-physical explanations” because the very notion of “non-physical explanation” is contradictory.

This.

And yes, the Dostoyevsky quote is pretty ridiculous. It only follows if one's moral system is entirely external.

And who's moral system is entirely external? An infant's.

Children grow up and they internalize morals. They learn to care about others for reasons above and beyond being rewarded.  The philosopher Spinoza once argued that the most mature form of morality is the desire to be moral because one holds that moral action itself is its own reward. I agree with him.

The pope's argument demonstrates the utter inability of theism to inculcate morality... you can't become moral to avoid punishment, you become moral because you care about others, without reward.

And that view of morals completely obviates the need for theism.

Exactly. But what more accurate description is there of theism than the infantile replacement of parental figures?
