Even Brief Touch Increases Perception of Ownership

Previous studies have shown that many people begin to feel ownership of an item — that it is theirs before they even buy it. But this study, conducted by researchers at Ohio State University, is the first to show mine, mine, mine feelings can begin in as little as 30 seconds after first touching an object.

Interesting. I wonder how that relates to internet shopping?

Seriously, I find that I can go looking for something and end up in that type of mental space before I actually decide to whip out the plastic. In fact, I have evolved some personal rules to keep myself under control. For example, there is a rule that I hold to when I am on ebay: Whatever I see, I never need it so badly that it is not worth waiting several weeks for the “right auction” to come around. If I need anything faster, I have to buy it locally.
