Valentine's day

Ok, my yearly rant on valentine's day. If I have to think of one word to describe valentine's day, it would be BULLSHIT, ok..so MAYBE that's two words, but it's the context that matters here.

Capitalist driven holidays such as xmas and valentine's day are exactly the kind of holidays that turn people into sheep. It's the idea that on these "special" strategically designed holidays that we have to worry about giving gifts or expressing love by going to the jewlry store and droppin 1/2 a grand on some diamond necklace that some poor kid in Africa got paid 2 cents an hour to mine. Or worse, that some Cinta Larga Indian in the amazon got slaughtered by some white man who's greed over diamonds has led him to illegaly mine on indian land. It's amazing how capitalism has turned some carbon based mineral into some "precious" jewel. And the irony here is that diamonds are made up of crystalized carbon...usually from organic matter. And those who exploit diamonds (such as religious institutions: Pat Robertsons diamond mines in Africa) are those same ones that tell you the earth is young....well Diamonds take a looooong time to make.. boy can you just see the greedy religoius hypocrisy here? I mean seriously, I think xtian institutions should ban diamond rings, because their existence is simply contrary to xtian beliefs.....BUT...because diamonds make money, it's accepted as being ok. Anyway...So yeah...I don't buy the bullshit. But I digress here.

But I digress here. Outside of just the problems associated with diamonds, the other aspect of Valentine's day is the very notion that this holiday demeans love to some materialistic bourgeois (yeah I said it) sentiment, that's empty in meaning and full of false notions.

Love is not something that is expressed by roses, love is not something that is expressed by candy or dinner or money or cards or whatever. Love is a feeling. To love someone means that you would give up your life for them...that you would unconditionally wish the person whom you are expressing love to: complete happiness..... Love is selfless.... Most people think that love is all about you... and how that person makes YOU feel. That's not love, that's selfishness. And it's that exact selfish idea of love that leads to bullshit holidays such as valentines day. It's all about what are you going to do for ME on Valentines' day. I want roses, dinner, diamonds and chocolate adn I'll give YOU sex.

I mean seriously. Love....is something that is supposed to be expressed with every word, every day, every second you are with someone. Love is supposed to be celebrated every day. But all it takes is a show of appreciation, a hug, a smile, a conversation, a walk, laying in silence on your bed locked in embrace. But most importantly love is unconditional. If you love someone, love them for WHO they are not for what they do for you. That is selfish. Love is not necessarily easy... Love is...well...love. A feeling of emotions towards a person, a feeling of appreciation of that person being alive.

Don't reduce love to selfishness.. You don't have to pay 100 bucks for dinner to show someone you love them.....all you have to do is grab them by the hand look at them straight in the face and tell them "I love you with all my heart"

Let me guess:  Somebody's significant other has been pushing for a little extra effort this Valentine's Day...?  Laughing

Yes, it is repulsive that we have holidays invented by greeting card companies.  Still, I have to think they have some value, or people wouldn't observe them.  Just because it came out of the maw of the corporate machine doesn't always mean it's bad.  Look at iPods.

Hahaha..no, my fiancee' doesn't ask for anything ever. Smiling

I think that Valentine's day holds absolutely no value to what I think love is.  I mean if it was true that valentine's day holds value and is a positive symbol of how people view love in this country, I don't think we would be seeing the divorce rates nearly as high as we have been.  It's all tied in I think.

Also, although I am a staunch critic of corporate greed, I also understand the machinery of capitalism, and there have been many wonderful technological advances that I use thanks to industry...for example, the computer I am using, the "broken" iPod I have (I've been to damn broke to buy another one), and others..however, that does not give a pass to the way we define feelings and emotions based on these material things..that's where my criticism begins..when we confuse our lust for material things with love.

Hmmm...

It is kind of ironic that Valentines Day and Venerial Disease have the same acronym
