Atheist Volunteers

Giving Food to Church
Submitted by PosingOwl on March 21, 2011 - 10:44pm.Hey Everyone,
I just signed up, intro is in intro post.... I would really like to get your opinions on a subject thats been bothering me for a few weeks....
If you had canned foods or other non-perishable items would you give them to a church to help feed the hungry or would you go out of your way to find a homeless shelter....
I think I would just give it to the church since it is for a good cause.... Do morals come into play or does Atheism vs Religion come into play? Please I would love to hear your feedback on this matter....
Thanks,
PosingOwl
Do Any of you engage in debate with Christian groups?
Submitted by andy5 on January 2, 2011 - 6:00pm.I was wondering if anyone here engaged in or knew someone who engaged in debates with fundamentalist, creationist, hardcore christian colleges and churches in public? I have been trying to find some to take on some particular ones I'm familiar with-I can't do it myself for various reasons but I know there are expert arguers out there who have good instant responses to all the usual arguments and I wondered how often they did stuff like that.

Looking for volunteer work but I'm curious...
Submitted by Bahana on September 19, 2010 - 5:21pm.Since I'm currently unemployed, I have been thinking of doing some volunteer work. This could bring some structure to my day, and I might make some contacts. In my area many organizations are also affiliated with religious groups. Should I be careful to avoid them, or does it make a difference as long as I'm doing something productive. I know I wont go to groups that have preaching, or bible studies, but sometimes even secular organizations partner with religious ones. What do you think?
Much Respect
Submitted by Crossover on August 9, 2010 - 8:08pm.As a Christian I'd like to take the time to thank most of you who are participating in and promoting most of these charitable causes. We don't ever think, or hear about for that matter, and atheists doing good for the community and the world. I FULLY understand that there are many atheists around the world doing great things, but I've never heard of an organized atheist effort for charity, only individual atheists doing work. In my opinion, when it comes to crime, disasters, and things like that...it doesn't matter what you believe. While my ultimate goal may be heaven, we live in this world right now and Christian, Jewish, atheist, agnostic, or whoever...if you're not doing anything to make this world better, then you don't deserve to reap the benefits.
While I obviously don't support all of the causes that I've seen reading these posts, and I don't agree with the goal of spreading atheism, I like that y'all are getting together to do good things. Keep it up. I know you don't like my goals of spreading Christianity, I hope that we can all at least come together and agree that no matter what your beliefs we need to make this world a better place. And I am glad to see that. Most Christians probably wouldn't do any volunteer work if the pastor didn't go on a guilt trip before the sermon to get people to do it, so it's even more amazing that y'all are doing it out of the goodness of your hearts and not on a guilt trip! Haha.
*Psychology Research on Atheist Volunteerism*
Submitted by Anonymous on February 9, 2010 - 12:52am.Hi everyone,
I am currently pursuing my doctorate in Psychology and would like to do my dissertation on volunteerism in an atheist population. My only problem is finding a large enough sample to study. I wanted to do a preliminary assessment of how many people would be willing to take part in the study before I get too far into it. It would involve you sending me your email address, me emailing you the surveys and consent forms, and you emailing me the completed surveys and consent forms back. All identifying information will be removed from the surveys before being entered and analyzed and of course no identifying information will be included in any publication of results. The consent form will outline your rights to privacy.
Unfortunately, I do not have much to offer in the way of compensation for taking part in the study (school is expensive!). However, I will hold a drawing in which four separate people will win $50 gift cards to the location of their choosing. Also, bettering the world's understanding of atheists and who they are as people may be compensation enough for those who do not win in the drawing : )
Once my dissertation is completed, I will share the results in this forum as well as email a copy of my dissertation to whomever is interested.
Please let me know if you would be interested in participating in such a study.
Many thanks,
Melissa

In his opinion piece titled "Celebrity atheists expose their hypocrisy", Dr Dvir Abramovich laments the attention that recent publications by the so-called "new atheists" have been receiving. He takes to task prominent atheists Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion) and Christopher Hitchens (God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything) over the positions they espouse in their best-selling books.
Abramovich's main point seems to be that the new atheists are hypocritical in criticising the evils of religion while at the same time ignoring the evils of secularism. Yet in the end one is led to wonder whether he has actually read Dawkins' and Hitchens' books, because both this point and the others he raises are directly addressed in their pages. Even if Dawkins and Hitchens are guilty as charged, Abramovich might equally be accused of emphasising the most laudable parts of religion while glossing over its long and continuing record of putting barriers between people, suppressing free thought and providing a convenient excuse for all manner of violence.
Thunderf00t and youtube
Submitted by wightsnow on February 23, 2009 - 3:29pm.I think it is important that we take notice of thunderf00t's recent effort. I realize this is my first post on this forum, but I have an active account on atheistnation.net and feel that this is important for all freethinkers/dissenters from dogma.

In the name of Atheism?

Atheists- Volunteer for free math and science tutoring
Submitted by Jen S on January 28, 2009 - 1:29am.I am a math teacher. I have thought that it would be a great idea for atheists to do some volunteer work. And Tutoring kids in math and science for free makes so much sense! It fits so well. What do you think?

The Church of No Faith is an organization dedicated to the fellowship and assembly of congregants who worship no mystery, believe in the human responsibility of self determination, and the finite nature of life.
three years already restoring abandoned church and 200 foot steeple which points up.
