Random act of kindness: Week Five through Seven

Renee Obsidianwords's picture

Every week I am going to share ideas and thoughts on a campaign to spread kindness. I do this as a validation that you don't have to believe in a god to be 'nice' and 'friendly' not to mention make a positive impact in peoples lives. Beyond sharing ideas, I will be following each kindness focus through journal entries and sharing a recap of my experience once complete. I have extended my focus from a length of one week to a length of two to four weeks. I feel that in some situations I can have a bigger impact on those involved if I dedicate more time (example: volunteer work)

Here is the focus for the week of 6-15 through the week of 6-30

Dedicate 4-8 hours per week to a local animal shelter.

Many of you already know that I have quit my Full Time job and taken a Part Time job that more closely fits my career goals. Doing this has put me in a position to dedicate time to volunteering! Smiling

I have decided to spend some time in 2 local shelters (shelters that we adopted our current pets from) In the past this type of volunteering has built a great connection to other volunteer opportunities so I am excited to start this newest act of kindness!

Until my next post!

-Renee

Renee,That's awesome!  We

Renee,

That's awesome!  We need more people to volunteer like this.  Lori and I smiled a bit because Lori used to volunteer at shelters for years.

**Quick update**

I signed up to help at a few shelters around here but it looks like the local kids home from college beat me to it. I will be dedicating my time in August and will journal my experiences here.

Sorry I haven't updated in some time!

Renee, a different way to

Renee, a different way to volunteer: Become a foster owner for dogs saved from high-kill shelters. I set up a website for (and adopted a dog from) Rover Rescue in Aurora -- http://roverrescue.org/ -- and they're always looking for folks to take dogs into their homes temporarily until permanant owners can be found. Just another thought...

So I have been able to

So I have been able to dedicate about 2 hours per week at a local shelter. I am working with 'little dogs' feeding them, exercising them and cleaning their holding areas. I loved the idea of fostering (thanks tilvernois) however my husband isn't as up on the idea!

I was able to recruit a young girl from one of my jobs to dedicate a few hours a week at the shelter, it would be a good thing for her to build confidence in working with strangers (never seem to work with the same volunteer) she loves it and has talked her brother and a few friends into volunteering as well. I feel really good about that as this shelter will be losing 5 volunteers to college in the next few weeks.
