New to RRS.

Atheist Dave's picture

I am new to RRS but have been an Atheist for about 10 years and "out" for about 6. It will take some time for me to get familiar with all the sites but I plan to stay involved for a long time. One of my interests is getting groups to join and cooperate. I live just south of Richmond Virginia and would like to meet anyone from my area. I have recently gotten involved with several local goups and attend meetings somewhat regularly. Most of the members of these groups are just as passionate as many of us online but are not quite aware of how powerful we have become. Many are much older and most are very well educated (retired professors, PHDs etc..). If anyone in the Richmond area is interested feel free to contact me.

Meetup.com is a good place to find locals in your area. Don't be intimidated if the members of groups in your area are much older, many in my area are retirees and they are full of passion and very open minded and accepting (unlike judgemental theists).

As for "older" people, you're right:  we're not really scary. Embarassed

Older people.

I'm glad to hear that part about scary. But you're not old...lol. I have had several people from RRS say things like "We need guys your age" to me. When I say "Old" I do mean "Scary Old"..lol. I am normally the youngest of the group with the oldest often 80 plus believe it or not. I was actualy a little nervous when I first walked into one of the meetings but soon saw that even with the age difference we were very like minded. And I felt comfortable very quickly. There is something special about an old, wise atheist. Nothing like what you would expect from people older than our parents and maybe even older than our grandparents. Being that age many have misconceptions about people online and don't realise how many people can be reached. I plan to get the groups in my area involved.                                                                                                                                                                    As for scary, that is something you are deffinately not.Wink

Thank you.   (Hope no one here ever sees me before I've had my first cup of coffee!)

Evolution.

I tried to copy and post something I posted as a bulletin on Myspace. Is it possible to do that in this format with firefox?

I want to be involved in the next Ergun Caner debate.

Please listen to his "sermon" on itunes if you can stomach it. It is well worth the time. Don't forget the fact that he is well educated in philosohpy and the use of logic in a debate. Keep in mind all the times you hear appeals to authority, red herrings and appeals to emotion. He is extremely convincing. His game is to defend his faith at all cost. Even the music is an appeal to emotion. Don't be afraid to agree with him because he will try to drag issues out and create distractions. He has studied our position and is more concerned with keeping people "in the fold" than he is in converting us. Christian apologetics is another good thing to study. I have the advantage of having seen some of their philosophy lectures which might as well be instruction in apologetics using philosophy and logic as best as they can to support their position. The logic is what is really in question here. He is not to be underestimated. It is very disturbing to me to hear his methods being taught in every Liberty course and I mean that literaly.

I foam at the mouth thinking of having the opportunity to debate this guy. He needs to be taken seriously and I want to adress him more than any other person.

On Ergun Caner.

I am listening to the debate as a write and realise that he has set up his listeners in his February sermon to hear this very debate. He had anticipated how it would go and in an attempt to be prepared. He has spent a lot of time on this and Liberty itself incorporates these methods into every course. Please take the time to listen to his "sermon". You will be suprised at how far these people would go.

Sorry, more on Caner.

Great job on the original sin argument. Caner really screwed that up. Arrogance masquerading as humility is sickening.

Wow, Dave... Welcome, and sorry...

I deleted a double post you had made, and I guess you had responded to your own post about four times, because several of your posts disappeared.  (When we delete a post, any responses to it are also deleted.  In the future, if you respond to the original post instead of the response, you guarantee that you won't have a "chain-delete" like that again.)

Sorry for that.  No harm intended.  I hope it won't piss you off too much if you have to retype a post or two.  Luckily they were pretty short, I guess.

Anyway, glad to have you.  Sorry 'bout the kick in the groin.

No problem.

Just ranting about Ergun Caner mostly. I am still getting familiar with the format. Been on Myspace for a while now and am looking for some debate that is challenging. I hope my forum post about my acess to Liberty lectures survives. They have been a real treat and would come in handy if the opportunity to go to Liberty were to arise.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Thanks,                                                                                                                     Atheist Dave
