Miss Manners don't live here anymore...

Once, long ago when I was working as a paramedic out of Fitzsimmons Army Med center in Denver, we got a call for an O.D. coincidentally in my apartment complex. When we arrived we found a girl, about 20, lying on the floor with the tell tale white froth on her lips. We went to work and I ripped open her blouse, cut up through her bra with my trusty scissors and initiated CPR. The girl hit the cosmic lottery, and we got her back.
A few days later, my commander called me in and informed me that the Mother had filed a complaint against my partner and I because we had 'exposed' her daughter... (he got our side of the story, and tossed the complaint in the round filing cabinet). I saw the girl on a daily basis, and I gotta say, she WAS hot... but to this day, I can't remember what she looked like 'exposed'...I had other things on my mind than 'boobies!'

I see a lot of complaints that us skeptics aren't polite... that we tend to be unfair and quick to judge 'alternate' ideas as bullshit... and say so.

A lot of 'alternate' ideas are simply dangerous. If not in themselves, then in the fact that they take time away from legitimate and effective solutions. Homeopathy... if it were just quacks peddling pure water as a pick me up...I'd just snigger and let it pass. But it's a case of desperate people wasting valuable time on utterly useless treatments.

There is no way of knowing how many have died from pursuing 'alternate' cures. Homeopathy, Orgone Therapy, Prayer, Faith Healing and other types of quackery.
I don't FEEL like being polite about people who endanger others for personal gain.
I don't CARE if I hurt your feelings if I call you favorite Woo-Woo cure bullshit...
I have other things on my mind beside than your boobs...

This is the same stupid shit

This is the same stupid shit as homophobes not wanting gays in the military. Do they really think the first thing a gay man is going to want is dick, while they are getting shot at?

This woman has her fucking head up her ass. You save her daughter's life and she accuses you of molesting her daughter? Does she really think most humans are going to think about sex while someone is in front of them on the edge of death?

You speak of snake oil in this post, was her OD a case of a quack selling her dangerous crap? Or is this post about the mother freaking out over standard operating procedure?

My point was, when lives are in the balance, we don't have TIME to be polite or worry about someone's delicate feelings...

Not just utterly useless... try directly harmful, deleterious, deadly and often highly poisonous. [sarcasm=Kapkao] This reminds me... I have a treatment for cancer that works on 99% of the cancer-stricken human population. It's  a plant-derived substance that indirectly targets and kills cancerous tissue inside the body the same way antibiotics target bacteria. It's Belladonna Essential Oils, and it's highly effective at killing cancerous growths inside the body. The active ingredient is Atropine, if you've ever heard of it. It's served with a dose of Pseudaconitine so that these two substances might work together to heal the body of pain.[/sarcasm]

Unfortunately, this metaphorical "treatment" since kills people as well, since killing people without using modern medicine is what folklore-based remedies do best. Death is also the only 'cure' for cancer millions of people across the globe, since death is the only exit from what is usually a long, drawn-out, exhaustive, and excruciatingly painful struggle against the uncontrolled growth of bodily tissues. However, the bioethics of most doctors and ambulance-chasers (at least in the states) dictate that someone must live until the bitter, painful end because allowing people to die with some sliver of dignity (euthenasia) is "ungodly", "sinful", and "immoral" or "amoral".

“A meritocratic society is one in which inequalities of wealth and social position solely reflect the unequal distribution of merit or skills amongst human beings, or are based upon factors beyond human control, for example luck or chance. Such a society is socially just because individuals are judged not by their gender, the colour of their skin or their religion, but according to their talents and willingness to work, or on what Martin Luther King called 'the content of their character'. By extension, social equality is unjust because it treats unequal individuals equally.” "Political Ideologies" by Andrew Heywood (2003)

I agree, but IMNSHO sometimes medicine is purely a question of reducing suffering.
