Homeowners Associations

I'm definitely not a Libertarian, but I am guessong Libertarians would agree with me that these "Homeowners associations" are a bad thing. Mainly because they try to make all kinds o stupid rules about what people can do on their own property - up to trying to make every house in the neighborhood look the same. Thoughts?

I used to live in an apartment where, according to our homeowners association, only white plain curtains were allowed and no knicknacks or plants in the windows. So I had to get rid of all my plants, cause they kind of need sun. the worst part was that they didn't provide the curtains, and my curtains were not "up to code". It's really a small thing, but.... well, it was kind of annoying.
I'm paying you for the right to live here....but I have to decorate my house according to your rulebook.
I think anyone should be able to put anything they want up in their house........ I've always wanted to have a huge festive devil holiday display for xmas..... Laughing out loud
All red and menacing with a huge grinning glowing satan head on my chimmney...... That'd go over well.

On that note, after he read about the holiday wreath & homeowners story here, ImmaculateDeception said he was unaware that the peace symbol was satanic, but that he now wants a head of baphomet pentagram wreath. Maybe I'll find him one at Home Depot for xmas!!!!
He could tell the homeowners association it's "religious expression". Actually his landlord is a cool guy, I doubt he'd care.

You can't pronounce

You can't pronounce homeowner without homo.

And we all know that homosexuals are vile and evil creatures.

I wouldn't want to live

I wouldn't want to live anywhere that had a homeowners association.

Homeowners Associations are

Homeowners Associations are generally a bunch of arrogant fascist pricks that want to shove their personal tastes down everyone else's throats, but are much to fascistic to ever get elected to a real office, so they just join the local neighborhood HOA. The people in the neighborhood that are not arrogant fascistic pricks have more important things to do with their time than make sure everyone is bringing the trash can in at the right time or takes their Christmas decorations down before Feburary. It's the busybodies whose time is so worthless that they can spend it controlling others.

They can be a good thing. I mean, with extremely lenient rules, i.e. don't fill your front yard with garbage, don't attempt to excavate a tyrannasaurus, and don't paint your house lime green with purple polkadots, they're more like an insurance agency trying to help you keep your land value from falling due to shitty neighbors.

But when I buy a house, I would move out and buy a patch of farmland to build a house on before I would move into a HOA suburb. Mostly because I want a monolithic dome house with three basement floors and I don't think HOAs want monlithic dome houses in the neighborhood.

My neighborhood's homeowner

My neighborhood's homeowner association is relatively harmless. It's something like $30 a year and most of that is used to plow the streets in the winter. In that respect it's very necessary.

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth;
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth!

Sounds like a better one -

Sounds like a better one - one that doesn't set idiotic rules. Every once in a while you'll see one manages to very seriously piss everyone off by banning the US flag.

Doesn't bother me. Only

Doesn't bother me. Only American flag I have is the Gadsden Flag. I wonder if they'd appreciate the irony of making me take down a flag that says "Don't Tread On Me".

The association in my

The association in my parent's neighborhood told him he couldn't put in an outdoor hot tub. He said fuck you and put it in anyway. The association put a $1000 a year lean against his property (4 years now) that he's refused to pay and is willing to fight tooth and nail in court.

He figures he'll be dead by the time the lean grows to the point that they can move to take the property, and he knows that when the property changes hands, all the person he leaves it too needs to do is remove the tub to negate the lean. So he sits in his tub, drinks beer and gives the neighbors the finger.

 I love my dad.

Have you heard of Columbia,

Have you heard of Columbia, MD? The whole thing is "incorporated" in the most literal sense. It's all under corporate control. Business signs can't be higher than 6 feet (maybe less) so good luck finding a store. (There are more goofy rules but I don't have them ready off the top of my head.) The entire town is under one HoA to make sure every house, condo, and apartment looks the same. Actually, I don't know anyone who owns a house there... perhaps it's just condos and apartments throughout. I'll have to take a look sometime.

Zoning laws can go berserk sometimes, too. Have you every seen an entire "downtown" where every single store and building looks like a cute little house? (sarcasm on) Isn't that precious?! (sarcasm off)

I'd rather deal with some fluctuations in market value because some tool lets his lawn grow to 3 feet tall than deal with being fined because I'm not keeping up with the Joneses. Besides, I'd rather buy a house/car/whatever that I'm going to live in or use than an investment. Besides, what's the use of having your own house and yard and whatnot if you can't paint your house purple with pink polka dots or smelt aluminum in your driveway or build a giant steel sculture for your front lawn...

Yes, I'm going to have fun if/when I buy a house. Smiling

(Urge to rant, fading...)

I figure they're just a group designed to keep minorities or other people designated as riff-raff out of upper class neighborhoods.  They may believe it lowers the property value of the neighborhood and infringes on their right to make a buck off their property.  I moved into a predominatly Hispanic community and my property value didn't go up so Homeowner's Assoc. are probably just something for the racists to keep minorities out without spending money on lighted crosses.
