Ask questions of Liberty University President

If all goes well we will be hosting Liberty University President, Ergun Caner on our show this Friday night live. Liberty University is best known for being associated with Jerry Falwel.

In a recent "sermon" Caner stated that the tough questions that atheists ask should be answered. We intend to ask him those questions and get his take. Please submit your questions now, in this thread. If there are any stand out questions we might award a signed copy of David Mills "Atheist Universe."

Thanks!

Divine Partnership

God and the devil are said to be enemies. that they fight their religious war between heaven and hell, but if that's true, why does it seem they work in partnership. When "god" deems someone unworthy of heaven, the devil punishes them for their sins. when god rejects them, the devil takes them in without a second thought, and tortures them for their sins against god. but if there was a war between them, anyone who has blasphemized against god would be a friend to the devil, and, according to common sense, would be in favor with the devil. so why then does this religious war between heaven and hell seem more like a partnership?

question I would like answered

All my life, I've been told that the Bible and Jesus are the only true ways to salvation. However, this is usually accompanied by the words, "You must have faith, God is omnipotent and omniscient." If this is true, then God would know upon creating me that I would blaspheme against his name and that I would deny the Bible and Jesus. If this is true, then it is not by my own willingness to do these things, but by God's decisions he made about me when crafting my soul and deciding upon the way I act and feel. If all these things are true, then why must I be damned to an eternity of Hell when I am simply being the person God made me to be?

A few questions centering

A few questions centering around the same subjet: If the Bible is the Living Word of God, then why does it stop? God doesn't stop...right? If The Bible is the Divinely Inspired Word of God, is one supposed to ignore all translations, interperetations, missing books (that Man chose not to add for what ever reason), misinterperations etc? If one is...wouldn't that be Blind Faith? Why did Christianity feel as thogh it was being attacked when Science posed the theory of evolution? (In no way does it say that God does or doesn't exist.) Was the church afraid of losing their hold on people and that "Evolution" was challenging their very tenet; if so, why? Is it that pertinent to the Christian Faith to believe that Jesus was a man (or son of God) who died on the cross for all the World's sins and rose from the dead? Isn't it enough to believe in the metaphorical Christ and to follow the faith with all one's heart (motivation, will-power etc)? If not, why not?

The people have always some champion whom they set over them and nurse into greatness...This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he first appears he is a protector. ~~Plato- The Republic

Nearly all species that have

Nearly all species that have existed are now extinct.  Why would God wantonly throw away his creations?  Why would ultimate death and destruction of so many of his creations be an intelligent action?  Is he not supposed to be perfect?

Why is it that the bible

Why is it that the bible says one thing, then as it continues say something completely different? Why does it say to love everyone, but also to kill those who are homosexual, of different religions, and who do stuff that the law can take care of? Why does it say that being gay is worse than murdering? If murdering is so horrible and in the ten commandments, why are there a lot of verses that say to murder others? Also, if god is so great, why can't he just put his hand down and take away those who sin or just erase all of the hatred in the world? Wait, I almost forgot, it says to be hateful and violent in the bible, does it not? Oh, and one more thing: Why is it that miracles mentioned in the bible are amazing such as healing the crippled or raising the dead but nowadays Christians say that miracles are everyday things like finding money? Did god make the person drop the $20 so someone else could benefit from it or is it some kind of test in which if god is actually real, he would be able to control the person's free mind so that they'd return the money?

I would like to ask Prof.

I would like to ask Prof. Caner the following litsny of questions about using the Bible as evidence of Christian exclusivity.

What evidence is there for "divine inspiration" for the literature
in the compendium of books compiled as the Holy Bible that was not in "the Egyptian Book of the Dead" for the Egyptians?
What evidence is there for such "inspired" countenance in their
literature that is not there for the Qur'an for Muslims? -- or for
that matter, the Bhagavad Gita, or the Epic of Gilgamesh?

Why am I in error if I am of the opinion that the Christian belief paradigm and the preeeminence of its foundational literature is rooted in nothing but culturally based suppositions? What evidence do you have otherwise and what evidence is there that events and circumstances in the Bible have special provenance in physical reality? How are both Testaments of the Bible understood by the reader through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, as stated in your school's doctrinal statement? What specifically is the empirical effect on the reader?

Can you please explain

Can you please explain bible contradictions? For example...

"For I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger forever." (Jeremiah 3:12)
"Ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn forever." (Jeremiah 17:4)

"If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid." (John 5:31)
"Jesus answered: Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid." (John 8:14)

"And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth." (Matthew 28:18)
"the whole world is under control of the evil one." (1 John 5:19)

And Jesus said, "For judgement I am come into this world." (John 9:39)
"I came not to judge the world" (John 12:47)

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)
"Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 6:1)

"Jacob said, 'I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.'" (Genesis 32:30)
"No man hath seen God at any time." (John 1:18)

We should fear God (Matthew 10:28)
We should love God (Matthew 22:37)
There is no fear in love (1 John 4:18)

and,

Foolery

"But anyone who says 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell." (Jesus) Mat 5:22

"You fools!" (Jesus) Luke 11:40
"You blind fools!" (Jesus) Mat 23:17
"How foolish you are" (Jesus) Luke 24:25

"But God said to him, 'You fool!' " (Jesus) Luke 12:20

"You foolish Galatians!" (St. Paul) Galatians 3:1
"You foolish man" James 2:20

(Also - Psalms 14:1 and again at 53:1 - you have to think me a fool because I have said in my heart that there is no God - oops, both of us in hell now!)

and,

Jesus teaches us how to turn the cheek and forgive those who trespass against us...

"Whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father." [Matt. x, 33.]

"Whosoever shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness." [Mark iii, 29.]

"Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee ... tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican." [Matt. xviii, 15-17.]

,and

Rejoicing

"Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles... If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink... He who rejoices at calamity shall not go unpunished." [Prov. 24:17; 25:21; 17:5]
"The Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you" [Deut. 28:63]
"The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance, he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked" [Ps. 58:10]

and,

Mercy

"Blessed are the merciful" [Matthew 5:7]
"Leave alive nothing that breathes. Show them no mercy." [Deut. 7:2]
"The Lord hardened their hearts... that they might receive no mercy." [Joshua 11:20]
"I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them. A curse on him who is lax in doing the Lord's work! A curse on him who keeps his sword from bloodshed." [Jer. 13:14; 48:10]

and,

Love?

"I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children." (Leviticus 26:22)

"Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourself every girl who has never slept with a man." (Numbers 31:17-18)

"The Lord commands: "... slay old men outright, young men and maidens, little children and women" (Ezechial 9:4-6)

"When the Lord delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the males .... As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves." (Deuteronomy 20:13-14)

"You will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you." (Deuteronomy 28:53)

"The Lord said to Joshua [...] 'you are to hamstring their horses.' " (Exceedingly cruel.) (Joshua 11:6)

"... Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword and; also the women and little ones.... every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall utterly destroy." (Judges 21:10-12)

"This is what the Lord says: Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass .... And Saul ... utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword." (1 Samuel 15:3,7-8)

"The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their women with child ripped open." (Hosea 13:16)

"A curse on him who is lax in doing the LORD's work!
A curse on him who keeps his sword from bloodshed!" (Jeremiah 48:10)

and,

The bible god admits he performs evil acts. (As if the above was not enough!)

If "God did not create evil" then what of the following? Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. Exodus 32:14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. Joshua 23:15 Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things. Judges 9:23 Then God sent an evil spirit 1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. 2 Samuel 12:11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house 1 Kings 9:9 ...therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil. 1 Kings 14:10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam

2 Kings 6:33 ...Behold, this evil is of the LORD;

2 Kings 21:12 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle.

2 Kings 22:16 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place

2 Chronicles 34:24 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof...

Nehemiah 13:18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city?

Jeremiah 4:6 Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.

Jeremiah 6:19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people

Jeremiah 11:11 Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them

Jeremiah 25:29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil

Jeremiah 35:17 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them:

Jeremiah 44:2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah

Jeremiah 45:5 ...behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD:

Jeremiah 49:37 ...I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:

Micah 1:12 .... evil came down from the LORD

Micah 2:3 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil

I have 3 questions: 1.

I have 3 questions:

1. Explain your answer to the theodicy problem: If God is all good, all knowing and all powerful, how can you explain the suffering of innocents?

2. If you're certain that the soul exists, that it is immortal, and that the souls of good people go to heaven where they encounter the awesomeness of God, then what is so wrong about murder? If the soul can't die, wouldn't a murderer simply help your soul reach God faster?

3. If Jesus only spent 3 days in Hell before his ressurection, then isn't Judas the one who died for our sins? After all, he will burn in Hell for all eternity for betraying Christ as God intended him to do so that Jesus could redeem all of mankind. Without Judus' betrayal and sacrifice of eternal damnation, mankind would not have been saved. How can you reconcile this paradox?

Basic Questions...

Christians claim that their god is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, and that despite the requirement of this belief that he preside in the energy that produces every atom of every object and process in the universe, he is never considered responsible for evil. Interestingly, though he is considered the creator of everything and possesses control over everything--including all evil acts and people--he is still not claimed to be evil.  Thoughts?

So, according to Christian belief, even though their one god is acknowledged as the only entity that allows each individual life and appoints the time for each person's death, abortion, suicide and murder are considered sins generated by people alone. These acts are attributed to a free will, thereby freeing their one god from all responsibility.  However, despite the theist claim that all processes (and the resulting objects) of the universe--including human life--being initiated, controlled, maintained and ended by the direction of one all-powerful, universally-present and all-knowing god who exists outside of time and is claimed by believers to see all events in time, human beings are said to have free will. How can humans truly have a "free" will devoid of all influences of such a god if they must exist within a world controlled by the laws of physics, mathematics, chemistry, and biology--all of which he is supposed to have created and without his constant presence and maintenance would not exist? Isn't it a contradiction of belief. If such a deity exists as most Christians understand it, then all aspects of birth, life and death are determined by the very experience that supposedly provides them a free will.  Would Christian "free will" therefore be a contradiction?

Since each of our lives would have to be predetermined by this god (again, according to the Christian argument), all sin would be predetermined and done through this god's rules, essence and direction--the same way as all events in the universe are described by Christian belief.  And, if this reality and the unchangeable processes of nature were not created and maintained by this god, then this god must operate within these rules and would therefore not be omnipotent as claimed by the Christian religion. As stated,if a god is responsible for this reality as theists describe, then there can be no free will.

If this god were omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, being all that we are composed of; creating and controlling all the rules we must follow; thus, not only allowing all which is considered "evil" but also actively participating though these powers and influences throughout all of time--and yet still sent/sends people to suffer for eternity in hell (psuedo-hell lake of fire) for the lives he chose to give them against their will, indeed without allowing them a will as I’ve shown--then this god is malevolent and cannot be a god of mercy or love.

The Christian god is also said to act through humans, though throughout time people have done things that oppose supposedly god-directed acts of other followers. Whether or not an action may be considered "righteous" depends on the reviewer's position in society, history and culture. Either the Christian god is fickle, or his followers are acting on their own beliefs and whims without supernatural guidance. If god is only attributed to some of these acts and proclamations and not others, then one must ask who has decided what was god's will and what was the will of a human? No matter what situation is considered from the Christian perspective, it will always yield a completely subjective conclusion.

If the "road to hell is wide and the gate to heaven narrow," implying that the majority of people will go to hell; and, all unborn children are indeed innocent, then a merciful Christian should prevent the eternal torture of vast numbers of souls by encouraging abortion--thus preventing that which Christians perceive as a soul from the overwhelming likelihood of going to hell after death. In other words, the possible life gets a "free ticket" to a glorious paradise where this soul would worship the Judeo-Christian god for all eternity instead of chancing the likely afterlife of eternal torture to his supposed displeasure!

However, if life is defined as beginning before birth, then all aborted fetuses possess sin and must end up in hell, as "all have sinned." All miscarriages and accidental in utereo deaths attributed to god-controlled and directed natural processes must necessarily end in eternal suffering as well. It is argued by some theologians that these souls would be offered a fair choice between serving god or denying god, though there is no biblical evidence supporting this (this argument, like the basis of Christian belief) is a manufactured story to explain the curious lackings of manufactured stories. If either point were true, then the Christian god would be neither merciful nor honest.

As follows, if such a god truly prescribes all life and all death, and all that exists is composed of his direction, then he is responsible for all life and all death--including abortion. If he holds total control and participation in the universe as required by Christian belief, then a soul's eternity would be his predetermined will as well. If we are to declare that this particular death was the will of god, but this other death went against his will, then he is either chaotically malevolent or he is not omnipotent.  Defense?

“Is God willing to

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.

Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?

Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”

If the statement, "all

If the statement, "all things are possible with god" is true, then it must be possible that god is evil, a liar, a homosexual, a flying spaghetti monster, etc. etc., or nonexistent. If this statement were true, it would also be possible that sin is good and righteousness evil, and/or penalties in the afterlife could be arbitrarily dealt to the deceased regardless of their faith or actions. It would also be possible that this reality could be heaven or hell, or that there is no heaven or hell. If it is impossible for god to be or do any of those things then all things are not possible with god, and such a god must exist within a set of rules that supersede him, or the statement is false, or god does not exist at all.

If the statement, "all things are possible with god" concerns humans in relation to a god and not the god himself, then sin and evil could be rewarded and righteousness punished. Indeed, anything that is considered the opposite of Christian belief could be true. If these things were not possible, then all things are not possible with god, and such a god must exist within a set of rules that supersede him invalidating the Christian belief in god's omnipotence, or the statement is false invalidating the Christian belief in god's omnipotence, or god does not exist at all.  Defense?

Hey Brian, Richard Spencer

Hey Brian, Richard Spencer here.

I'm afraid that many of these questions are the kind that Caner will have heard many times before--you're certainly aware of this. I would be cautious about asking him these sorts of things because he likely has well-rehearsed answers that will turn his appearance on your show into a Caner sermon rather than a critical examination.

I actually called Liberty University and was able to get linked to a doctrinal statement of faith that is "mandatory... to which all faculty members subscribe." I would suggest questions (at least initial questions--not follow-up questions) be asked in reference to something listed from the following website: http://www.liberty.edu/index.cfm?PID=6907

This way you can frame your questions in the following manner: "Dr. Caner, the statement of faith to which you subscribe states __________ . So, my question is ___________." Doing this will avoid the response "well, some Christians may believe that, but I don't," or, "well that's not what real Christians believe." Both of these responses deflate the question and waste time in what could otherwise be a productive dialogue.

I will post some of my questions later. Remember the website!!!

Just a few more:   Did any

Just a few more:

Did any of the animals on the ark eat any of the other animals?

Isn't the Bible and the Cross violations of the 2nd commandment?

Is what's pious pious because God declared it so, or is piousness exist outside of God?

Though there are people in

Though there are people in each congregation that must struggle to properly clothe and feed themselves and their children, and cannot afford to maintain their less-than-modest vehicles if they even own one, almost all pastors live in well-kept houses and have little trouble eating what they please, buying new suits and driving reliable vehicles. Though these poor members often work 40 hours a week or more and still fight to make ends meet, they are asked to contribute money to their beautiful churches and the coffers of their preachers each Sunday while the clergy need only to speak two days a week from a stage and give a few consultations in offices that offer more comforts than the homes of some members of their churches.  Christian television networks, massive Christian music events --each generating hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more) are offered for consideration as well. Even if you are able to convince us that a pastor "actually works more than that," isn't the wealth and comfort gap an injustice, and an example of a near-universal Christian hypocrisy at its worst and most apparent?

Ok, I came up with a

Ok, I came up with a few:

Dr. Caner, your statement of faith proclaims that "the return of Christ for all believers is imminent." If I understand this correctly, this would mean that Christ's return is close in time, that it will happen soon. It does not mean that Christ's return could happen at any moment, because that would just mean that Christ's return could be imminent. So, you believe that Jesus will return in the very near future. So can you explain to me how you reconcile your belief with the fact that the writers of the New Testament also believed the very same thing--that the return of Christ was "at hand"--yet their expectations were not fulfilled?

Dr. Caner, your statement of faith proclaims that humans were created "directly" in "the very image of God" and that we have "not evolved." Could you please tell me exactly what "the image of God" is that we were created in? Could you also please explain how you expect your school to remain relevant in the 21st century while denying the fact of evolution?

Dr. Caner, can you empirically justify your claim that the books of the Bible were "inerrant in the originals?"

Dr. Caner, if the books of the Bible were inerrant in the originals, yet we do not have the originals, how do we determine what the authoritative word of God is? Doesn't belief in an inerrant Bible require us to believe that not only is the Bible inerrant in the originals, but also that our interpretation and reconstruction of what the originals said is inerrant?

Dr. Caner, if what your statement of faith says is true, that Jesus "lives forever as perfect God and perfect man" with "two distinct natures inseparably united in one person," and that Jesus "arose physically and bodily from the dead" and "ascended into heaven," then I have some questions. First, can you explain how two natures can be united in one person, yet remain distinct? Is this a mystery that requires faith to believe? Second, if Jesus arose bodily and physically from the grave, then surely he arose physically and bodily into heaven. Luke-Acts makes it clear that the ascension was of a literal nature; that is, Jesus rose upward into the sky. Such a picture would have made sense to people living in a time before we understood what was really above the "firmament," but in order to reconcile the story of the physical and bodily ascension of Jesus with someone who lives forever as a man, this requires us to believe that Jesus is literally in outer space somewhere. Is Jesus' literal extraterrestrial presence something you believe in, or do you have some other method of reconciling Jesus' resurrection, ascension, and status as an eternal man? Third, what purpose does Jesus' intercession serve for us? What would happen if Jesus weren't praying for us? Is it possible for Jesus to have unanswered prayers? If Jesus is God anyway, isn't he just ultimately talking to himself? Fourth, in what sense is Jesus in heaven? How did going upward into the sky help him get there? Is Heaven a physical place that we can detect with modern telescopes?

Dr. Caner, your statement of faith asserts that "Angels were created as ministering agents, though some, under the leadership of Satan, fell from their sinless state to become agents of evil." First, can you please provide me with references from the Bible that make this doctrine clear? Second, do angels have a free will similar to what God created people with? If not, how was it that angels and Satan "fell" from their sinless states? If so, is it possible for Jesus to make some sort of sacrifice to redeem fallen angels in the way that he redeemed fallen man?

My question.

I don't know much about the man, but to me the obvious line of questioning would be this:

Do you "Know" god exists?   If yes, please share with us how you know.  Faith is not knowledge... (and then point out to him the critical thinking skills that are necessary to make the distinction).  If the answer is no, how can you justify supporting formalized education that is based on the assumption that god does exist, but you personally do not know to exist?

Just a thought...  I know this man can do nothing but defend his position with dogmatism.  When I think of putting myself in his shoes, I imagine my whole life and social structure being based on the assumptions of christianity.  He couldn't possibly cede a millimeter to what he sees as the enemy.  If he did he'd risk losing it all.  Think of the position of power and prestige he holds.  I know how much courage it took for me to reveal that I didn't believe in god even to the people who I knew would love me no matter what I thought, and I'm nobody.  That same act is virtually impossible for him.  The best anyone could do is open up his mind to experiencing what it's like to have a little bit of intellectual honesty.  That might get him thinking.... But maybe even that is too optimistic.

Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.

I understand that Liberty

I understand that Liberty University has a display of dinosaur bones which it claims to be 6,000 years old. IN that case, how do you explain this:

Large atoms with concentrated, crowded nuclei are highly unstable. To correct the instability, they will either

a) Release a highly ionizing but low energy particle consisting of a helium nucleus with two protons and neutrons. This is called alpha radiation.

b) If the nucleon number is isotopically unstable, the atom will change a proton into a neutron or vice versa allowing an electron to be released or a positron depending on beta minus versus positive.

Another thing they can do is released an ultra-high energy wave called gamma which is irrelevent to my question below.

For instance, a carbon-14 isotope. 99.999% of all carbon is stable carbon-12. but carbon-14 isotopes are not stable and make up 1ppt (part per trillion) of all carbon. They release beta radiation to correct the nucleon instability by firing off an electron. This causes it to decay into Nitrogen-14. The great thing about radioactive decay is that it is a random process that obeys probability laws. The other good thing about it is that you can dip a radioactive material in molten lead, in acid, shoot it, burn it, fire particles at it, try to irradiate it again, pass a current through it...and none of these things will change the isotope clocks. They are fixed.

Now let me explain how we use this to measure the age of the Earth and organic material. Radioactive half-life is the amount of time it takes for the Geiger counter count rate (CPS) to fall by half. Radioactivity is a Zeno's paradox, because it falls to 1/2 then 1/4 then 1/8, but never to 0. It takes the same amount of time to fall from full to half as from half to quarter because the probability remains the same, because radioactive decay is an elemental nuclear cycle.

Depending on their isotopic properties, different isotopes and elements decay at different rates. Uranium 238 has a half life of 4500 million years...almost exactly the age of the Earth. Certian Thorium isotopes, and Polonium 221 for example, half in hours to seconds.

All life is made out of carbon, and all life is made out of roughly the same percentage of carbon-14, which is 1ppt (part per trillion). So if we examine a dead plant by giving it a radiocarbon test, and we find the amount of carbon 14 (can be calculated using the mass of total carbon) and the count rate has reduced to 1/8, it means that the plant is 18,000 years old roughly, because C-14 has a half life of 6000 years (actually about 5300 years). The N-14 that C-14 decays into is simply released into the atmosphere.

If you dont like Carbon 14 dating, there are over 20 types of radioisotope dating, including Pb-Ur, Ar-Ar, K-Ar etc etc. Some of which can date back millions and billions of years because the isotope is more stable.

To prove that the dinosaur bones are 6000 years old, you would need to find some rocks in ancient geological striation,  among the dinosaurs, and test them using multiple isotope tests, which should give you a dating of between 3000 and 10,000 years if you are right.

Radiometric dating is not exact science. However, dinosaur bone dating never drops below 65 million years. They cannot provide exact answers for ancient (millions to billions of years) dating, but using a range establishes concensus. If the Earth was only 6,000 years old, the radioactivity emitted by unstable materials would be huge. We would immediately notice it because almost none would have decayed...in fact, we would not be here because life could not survive in that environment.

Thus my question remains: How can you claim these bones are 6000 years old in the face of decades of scientific evidence to the contrary?

"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. It is preposterous to assert that the process of systematic scientific reasoning arbitrarily excludes “non-physical explanations” because the very notion of “non-physical explanation” is contradictory.

I find that it's always very

I find that it's always very impressive when I've heard you stop the guest as they begin to make an argument you've heard a dozen times, and then politely finish their argument and the next five arguments you knew they were going to make, and then when they confirm that that's in fact exactly where they were going, deliver your counter argument. I've heard you do this several times, and it immediately deflates the other guy because suddenly the theist audience members and the guest themselves realize they're not as novel and clever as they thought, but that they're just making the same stupid arguments over and over again like a broken record.

I have so much to say

I have so much to say having lived in that city, but since this thread is about questions, I will refrain from giving Jerry what for.

1. What seperates Creationism from Scientology from Kabbalah from a Muslim claiming a Quran verse talked about plate techonics? Isnt all this junk science? Doesnt all this amount to the bastardization of science in the intrest of club cheerleading?

2. We know scientists come in all labels and the overwhelming vast majority find evolution to be fact. Isnt the tactic of attacking evolution a diversion away from magical claims?

3.Why do Christians focus so much on the existance of Jesus when the far more important issue are the fantastic claims of his birth and death are unscientific. Can the guests show the mechinisms of a "spirit" getting a girl pregnant? What would have been Mary's age? How exactly does a 3 day old dead body survive rigor mortis?

4. If one were to take the flood myth as real, would there have been women and babies and children drowned in the flood?

5. If God could make the earth in 6 litteral days, why did he take over 1,000 years and 40 falable humans to put together his manual?

6. For the "true" Christians to get into heaven in the after life doesnt that require that all those billions who didnt believe to burn in hell?

7. Are they aware of where biblical motifs came from? Such as

Horus assending into heaven to sit at the right hand of Osirus in judgment of the dead? The Code of Homarabi(EYE FOR AN EYE). Baal and El and Asurah being Canannite polytheistic gods. Horus spitting in the eye of Thot to cure his blindness. The Epic of Gelgamesh's flood.

Thats all I can think of now.

Why do creationists use a

Why do creationists use a false dichotomy? They spend all their time attacking evolution, to draw attention from the fact that they have no evidence for their claims? Evolution has evidence. It may be the subject of high controversy, most of which is not based in reality, but it does have evidence. It is this evidence that creationists spend all their time attacking. Instead, they should be tryinmg to accumulate evidence for creation. No creationist I have debated has ever actually given me some evidence for their explanations, instead they attack our explanations. This method of false dichotomy is not based in science.

"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. Question: Do you believe

Question: Do you believe what is in the Bible is 100% true with no errors, no falsehoods, no misleading passages, no faults of any kind whatsoever?

Followup question to a no answer: Then what parts of the Bible do you think are misleading, false, in error, or faulty?

And, knowing that these parts are faulty, do you obey them anyway, or do you reject them in your daily life?

And, knowing that the bible is faulty in some ways, how do you know which parts are faulty and which aren't?

Followup question to a yes answer: Then why is there so much confusion and disagreement between various people who read the bible? Wouldn't a perfect book be perfectly understood by anyone who reads it? If not, then how does it make sense to call it perfect?

If you had to boil it down to one question, I would really like to hear an answer to this one (from above): "Then what parts of the Bible do you think are misleading, false, in error, or faulty?"

Another good follow-up to that would be, "If the bible could be improved by removing, or otherwise editing, these faulty parts, then why don't you christians make a new version of the bible with all the crap taken out of it? That way, we wouldn't have to deal with the nutjobs who believe everything in the bible literally.

Q: "Isn't it a miracle that the universe/life/consciousness/myself exists?"
A: "No."

For any person P, question Q, and concept X
If the asking of Q depends on the existence of X, and P asks Q
Then X exists, and P should not be surprised of that

A question no one has answered

My friend and I have asked this question to Christians, and no one could give us a straight answer...

If Jesus was God, then what was Adam? Did he not come from God? Adam had no father but God. So, how can Jesus be God and not Adam?

Please provide physical evidence Smile

We're always told that Adam

We're always told that Adam and Eve were made with free will, because god doesn't like being loved by robots. Then why did he make them like children, when children love their parents unconditionally?

Along the same line, apparently there is no sin in heaven. But since man is not perfect that would imply that there would not be any free will there to begin with. So why was is necessary to begin with here on Earth?

Why don't they celebrate thanksgiving in England? They should be thankful the puritans left.

Questions

1. Why won't god heal amputees?

2. Why do christians want laws inacted that don't persoanlly affect them?

For example, christians promote bans on same sex marriages-so don't marry someone of the same sex.

christians promote overturning of Roe V Wade-if you don't like abortions, don't have one.

christians initiated blue liqour laws- if you don't want alcohol on Sunday, then don't buy it.

3. Are you Pro Life?

4. If you are a Pro Life advocate, do you believe in the death penalty?

5. If so, shouldn't you change the title of your stance to something other than PRO LIFE? Like Pro Fetus, or Pro Embryo

6. If the recent ossuaries are found to be those of Jesus of the bible-THE SON OF GOD as you claim, will you still believe that Jesus rose from the dead after 3 days and assended into heaven to be with his father, even though new evidence will show that he never left earth?

7. If you decide to continue to believe as you have, why?

8. What would happen to religion if the government decided to start taxing the churches across america?

The evil being our fault

When I ask theists why there is evil in this world seeing as they believe there is an all-powerful, loving God, they always respond that it was man who disobeyed God and because of that God punished man with the evils of this world. Or they say it is because of Satan. Well, either way, it must be God's fault. Let me explain. God is all-knowing so He obviously knew that man would disobey Him. God is all-powerful so He obviously could have stopped man from disobeying Him. So it was clearly God's intention for man to have disobeyed Him, therefore God meant for there to be evil in this world, therefore, God is evil.

If God created everything, then God must have created Satan. God, being all-knowing, must have known that Satan would be evil and so it was His intention by creating Satan for Satan to be evil therefore making God evil for creating evil.

If neither of these are the case, then God is either not all-knowing, not all-powerful, or He is neither therefore He would not be a God.

--Kevin Johnston

Also: Your belief system allows you to believe that species do evolve, but not into different species. By believing that, you must believe that there is a point where the species stops evolving. But if a species stops evolving, then it would have to go extinct if it's environment were changed which it undoubtably will be. How can you justify that belief?

Your belief is that man is the creation of God, yet man is, as we all can agree, very poorly "designed". We have an apendix, destined to explode. A tailbone destined to be broken. Pubic hair, constantly itching. Testicles in such a bad place, so vulnerable. A back meant for walking on fourlegs, explaining why human backs always go bad. Most humans have impaired vision. Humans, even those who follow the Lord, grow old and get cancer and die slow painful deaths. Can you explain these?

Your belief is that the Bible is the right book, that it is good, and that it must be followed in order to reach Heaven. I was wondering if you kill people of other faiths. In Deuteronomy 13:7-11, God tells you to kill people who speak to you about different Gods. So, do you kill people of other faiths or would you rather go to Hell?

Do you believe it is through faith that we no longer torture alleged heretics and have progressed out of the Dark Ages?

‘Dr.’ Caner, A

‘Dr.’ Caner,

A hypothetical scenario that could be real if the ‘god model’ of the universe is correct.
If you were to die at the same time that someone very close to you did such as a child, wife, or best friend and they were condemned to hell would you question the judgment or just accept that they were not righteous enough and deserved their punishment?

Now let’s suppose that it were possible for you to take that special person’s place in hell so that they could go to paradise. Would you?
You may answer for the gift of this choice coming from both ‘god’ or ‘the devil’.

If ‘YES’ is the answer then are you supplanting the will of god with your own? After all, they would be in hell as a condition of god’s judgment right?

If ‘NO’ then how would heaven/paradise be so wonderful knowing that the other person was enduring torment that you could have prevented?

If ‘MAYBE’ or ‘DEPENDS’ is the answer then I ask what should make the difference ethically or morally?

God and slavery

The Bible does not ban slavery, but, in fact, goes so far to say you can even beat your slaves. My favourite Bible verse is Exodus 21:21, which says that it is okay to beat your slaves, so long as they do not die IMMEDIATELY. If you beat your slaves, and they survive the beating and die from it two days LATER (presumably after two days of horrible pain and agony), that is okay (according to the Bible), because the slave is their owner's "property" (or, as many Bible translations put it, "his money&quotEye-wink.

Christians even go so far as to defend this appalling treatment, saying that it was "relatively" kind for the time. This guy ( http://www.serve.com/thibodep/cr/slavery.htm ) even praises the Biblical laws on slavery because-- shock, horror-- they enabled slaves to come into contact with the Gospel.

Many Christians I've talked to attempt to defend this verse by saying that it "no longer applies" since Jesus's sacrifice supposedly invalidated the Old Testament laws (except, of course, the anti-homosexuality ones in Leviticus-- nudge nudge, wink wink). But [1] God is not supposed to "change", and [2] if God permitted slavery-- and slave-beating-- thousands of years ago, but doesn't presently, doesn't that mean that he's still immoral (since God's character does not change)? Should we really "forgive" (or defend) God for horrible things he did thousands of years ago, if he's supposed to be eternal and unchanging?

I would love to hear your thoughts on why you worship a God who explicitly permits beating slaves.

Sapient, these are my

Sapient, these are my questions for Caner:

Dinosaur fossils were not discovered until after the Bible had been written, which explains why the Book of Genesis fails to explain their existence. Christians around the world accept the fact that there were dinosaurs because they can not deny the amount of physical evidence. This being said, most fundamentalist Christians believe in the Book of Genesis as fact, so much so that they deny evolution because it contradicts the Book of Genesis. If Dinosaurs existed 6,000 years ago, as Christian time allows, then they must have co-existed alongside man, correct?

-----------------------------

You have admitted that the Bible is an old book, written by man. Therefore I assume that is your reasoning behind why it has inconsistencies and faults. What determines what is faulty and what is true? Evidence of evolution and non-religiously biased historical investigations have concluded time and time again that many of the Bible's events did not happen, yet Christian teachings and ideologies still come from claims of the Bible. How do you know what you're teaching is the truth and not another 'mistake by man'?

--------------------------------

You used to be a Muslim. What, in your mind, made Islam the incorrect religious choice, but Christianity the correct choice for you?

---------------------------------

What's your response to this:

Scientific method consists of gathering facts to form a conclusion. Christians, though, already have a conclusion. What they seek are facts to prove their conclusion, and only those facts that support their conclusion. Therefore, Christian Science is not true science, and holds no merit.

----------------------------------

If God is such a loving, caring, all knowing and forgiving god, why is he the evil son of a ***** that he is in the Old Testament?

ASK A PRIEST!!!!

I am collecting questions for the next couple of weeks. Do you have a question you'd like to ask a priest? Post it here:

Here is a question, if god

Here is a question, if god made everything, what is he made of, you cannot create that witch is part of you already, or else it wasn’t created, like morality, if morality is made by god (as we are often told), he cannot be moral, if compassion is made by god, again, he cannot have any compassion whatsoever, the same is true for Forgiveness, Tolerance, Humility, Patience, (not to mention beauty), so which is it, did he create all those things as you say, or is he Moral/Compassionate/Forgiving/Tolerant/Humble/Patient/Beautiful, but therefore, (and this is the impotent bit) NOT omnipotent

I have a question, but it's

I have a question, but it's probably not very good.  I'm not a historian or a scientist, I have basic knowledge of both.

It says in Genesis 1:27  "And God created man in His own image"

Does that mean god has arms and legs?  What would a bieng like god need with appendages?  Does he have a circulatory system? Dose he need to eat?  For that matter, does god poop?

I apologize if these are dumb, but they've been in the back of my mind since I was a young child.

If god is "outside of time"

If god is "outside of time" or "outside of space", as we've often heard as the reason why we can not find any trace of her, what does this mean? How can anything be outside the realm of possibility? If it does not mention this in scripture, how is this known?... Also how would you go about persuading someone that this is indeed the truth, say, to someone who is very skeptical of all religions and their holy books but open to all possibilities.

Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.

1. Dr. Caner, your statement

1. Dr. Caner, your statement of faith proclaims “We affirm that Adam, the first man, willfully disobeyed God, bringing sin and death into the world. As a result, all persons are sinners from conception”

If by this you mean that all mankind are being punished for the sins of Adam, how do you reconcile this with the Deuteronomy 24:16 (Which is a quote from God) that states “The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. “

This verse appears to imply that one should not be punished for the sins of their fathers/ancestors. However, isn’t this exactly what is going on with mankind being condemned for Adams actions?

2. Dr. Caner, your statement of faith proclaims that “all persons are sinners from conception.” It also proclaims that “…each person can be saved only through the work of Jesus Christ, through repentance of sin and by faith alone in Him as Savior.”

My question is, if one of the necessary conditions for one to be saved is the repentance of sin, and if at conception we become sinners, where then do you believe aborted children go? A fetus according to you is a sinner, yet is incapable of being saved since he or she can not repent. You answer must be hell if you are to be consistent.

What makes something worthy

What makes something worthy of worship?
26,000 children starve daily why do you think that God will answer your prayers?

Is there free will in heaven?
If so why did God create the Earth since God could abtain free will worship in heaven without human pain.
If there is not free will in heaven then how did the angels rebel?

Do you abtain your morality from the Bible? If yes then why don't you put everyone to death as it is commanded in the OT?

Is the KJV Bible without errors?
If he says no just show some errors
2 Samuel 10:18
1 Chronicles 19:18

If he says ask, why would you trust your soul to a book with errors in it?

Would you live your life in the same manner if you did not believe in God?

Why did God kill David's innocent son for David's sin?

2 Samuel 12:14
Why was Uzzah killed for trying to steady the ark? He was only trying to stop it from falling.
2 Samuel 6:7

How are there Nephilim (giants) before and after the flood?
Gen. 6:4
Numbers 13:32-33

How can you explain why this

How can you explain this not going down in the history books:
Matthew 27:52-53
52 The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

Do you believe that when children die they go to heaven? If you believe that they do then why should we not kill them? A short life with heaven is better than a long life with hell. God could forgive me for murder and the kids would go to heaven. The same argument can be used for abortion. If you believe that children go to heaven when they die what about a fetus? If you think that a fetus would go to heaven then it is moral to kill them so that there is zero chance of going to hell. Right now Christians do not even make up half of the world’s population so it would be less than 50/50 chance of a child going to heaven if he/she grew to the age of accountability. I hope you realize that I do not believe in a heaven and believe that killing children is wrong.

If we are supposed to have

If we are supposed to have free will and immortal souls why do we have material minds?

If we didn't have a soul to explain our complex behavior we would need a very complex control system somewhere in our bodies. If we did have an immaterial soul we wouldn't need a complex control sytem since our behavior is being controlled from the spirit world(I presume). Yet when we look at our bodies we find perched upon our shoulders the most complex control system ever seen, the human brain, with billions or neurons and hundreds of trillions of interconnections. It's not just complex, but highly modular: damage to specific parts of your brain can result in very specific damage to emotional, perceptual, and other cognitive functions.

If there is some evidence that suggests that we do have immaterial souls could you please provide it?

You don't have to ask this

You don't have to ask this question but even as a Christian (I was a very liberal Christian) I was troubled by this story:

Matthew 8:28-34 says, "When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 'What do you want with us, Son of God?' they shouted. 'Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?' Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The demons begged Jesus, 'If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.' He said to them, 'Go!' So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region."

Why the fuck did Jesus do that? I would have asked him to leave too ...
