Yay I am new here.
Hi,
So this is my intro. I am a 25 year old Grad student living in St. Louis. I have been an identified atheist for about a year or so. Growing up, my parents sent me to a Lutheran pre-school but never made myself or my two siblings go to church, and we really never talked about god very much. Our parents wanted us to decide for ourselves - they were raised catholic.
Well, letting your kids decide for themselves without any particular direction - at least in the case of my siblings and I - produced three atheists.
I have never been very religious. When I was a kid Lutheran preschool caused me to think Jesus stood between the wall and the headboard of my bed at night to watch over me. I guess I believed in heaven and all of the nice sweet things they tell you in preschool but I honestly don't remember.
In Jr high I was sort of pagan I guess you could say - hey, it was hip and mysterious.
In high school I went to a church with a boyfriend - but I only went for him, I could not wait for it to be over. He actually worshipped, and I remember being quite disgusted when I would turn to look at him and see his eyes closed in prayer. I read the Conversations with God books by Neale Donald Walshe, who promotes more of a pantheism, so I was into that for awhile.
At some point I realized that just because I wanted there to be an afterlife, and just because I wanted souls and whatnot to be real, does not make them real. Plus, if god was all of these omni's, one could not speak of god intelligibly anyway, so it was pointless to try because any attempt to define god would put him in this anti-omni box.
At some point I realized that this was all just wishful thinking. So I began to read about atheism. I read a LOT. Dawkins, Harris, etc. As soon as I finished one books I would grab another.
So here I am, another proud atheist. I have to thank my parents for letting me decide for myself. Thanks mom & dad!
