Atheist Art.

Who says you need a supernatural being to inspire you?

I wanted to thank the Rational Response Squad and this website for an article that I cann't seem to find again that inspired a work of "art". I am a senior level Graphic Design student in my last semester at Indiana State University and was told to make a collage as part of an advanced drawing class. I have been critisized that my work was lacking a "high art" quality in meaning and depth.

No shit? I'm a graphic designer, I don't think on that level.

Anywho, I decided to express MY feelings and found this article that inspired me, it was an article talking about all the famous people that were burning in hell according the the Bible. The first one was Anne Frank and the idea of "Hitler wanted to burn Anne Frank, for this he is called a madman. The Christian God will burn Anne Frank for all eternity for this he is called just" stuck in my head and gave me a way to complete the problem presented.

I purchased a copy of the King James Version of the bible, ripped out the pages that state that only those who believe in Jesus get into heaven and highlighted those passages. I then took the descriptions of hell and highlighted them as well. I collaged them with a burnt up half tone of Anne Frank's photo and then drew some non-representational bullshit on it. (They love that stuff.)

The assignment will be viewed today (April 18, 2007) and we'll see how it goes over with the 90% Christian class I am in.

Thanks to the article for the idea, and if people are interested enough in the project, I can take some photos of it later this weekend and share it.

Just thought I'd let you all know that you helped me find a way to express how I feel about religion throught art. Thanks RRS!

Hello Icebergin

Hello Icebergin

Welcome to Rationalresponsers

I think this is the article you are referring to:

People in Hell, According to the Tenets of christianity

I think many people here would like to see it. Can you take a picture of it and post it in the forum?

Oh, that sounds awesome.

Oh, that sounds awesome.  I'm an artist myself too, and I'm getting into interactive media.  However, I do do some illustration too, mostly just cartoons.

That sounds amazing.  One

That sounds amazing.  One thing the atheist movement is missing is a good body of art.  I myself am a graphic designer and have done a few atheist themed peices but nothing too significant.  Lucidfox, can you send me some of your cartoons?
