Flat Earth Society - Opinions please

Ok, I first came across the Flat Earth Society a year or so ago.

I've always considered them a parody.  However, I just read a post from a member here that think they aren't.

I assumed that they were kidding around and were just using debate tactics to defend an idea that they didn't really believe.  Now I've got some doubts.

What is everyone's opinion on them?

Are they serious or joking?

I don't know if the people

I don't know if the people with a website are serious, although first impressions lead me to believe that they are.

I vaguely remember a television program (...I think it was "Real People," which should tell you how long ago this was...) that did a story about one guy who apparently was quite serious about the earth being flat, the moon landing being faked, etc.  He was basing all of this on...you guessed it...his interpretation of the Bible.  As if more proof of the falsehood of religion were needed.

According to Steven

According to Steven Weinberg in the series of conferences called "Beyond belief '06", the flat earth society was a joke that one his friend pulled off to replace the spherical earth theory taught in science classes as a laugh at the Intelligent Design movement.

YouTube it... I don't feel like finding the video lol

The wikipedia entry for the Flat Earth Society says that it was started by Samual Rowbotham who lived from 1816 to 1884.

I'm getting confused.

Yes, that was the real Flat Earth society, in London, which no longer exists. I think she is referring to the one that exists today, in California.

"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. It is preposterous to assert that the process of systematic scientific reasoning arbitrarily excludes “non-physical explanations” because the very notion of “non-physical explanation” is contradictory.

Oooooh.  Ok, so the first one was serious and this one is a joke.

Whew.  I was getting worried there for a minute.

I think its hilarious that we can have a hard time distinguishing between a joke and a real religious group.

I always figured the Earth

I always figured the Earth was a dome. The Southern Hemisphere doesn't actually exist. Winter in June? Yeah right!

Reminds me of a sign above the entrance to the physics room in high school:

i had no idea this was a

i had no idea this was a real or fake society. I googled it. very strange

i alway thought Flat Earth Society was a Bad Religion song

Lie, lie, lie.......
The full moon is rising over dark water
And the fools below are picking up sticks
And the man in the gallows lies permanently
Waiting for the doctors to come back and tend to him,

The flat earth society is meeting here today,
Singing happy little lies
And the bright ship humana is sent far away
With grave determination....
And no destination, lie, lie, lie

Yeah, nothing feels better than a spray of clean water
And the whistling wind on a calm summer night,
But youd better believe that down in their quarters
The men are holding in for their dear lives,
The flat earth society is somewhere far away,
With their candlesticks and compasses
And the bright ship humana is well on its way
With grave determination.....
And no destination, lie, lie, lie, ad infinitum

Contrary to the few opinions that exclaim parody, to my knowledge the Flat Earth Society is real.
