What is your favorite religion/cult ?

While I think that Mormonism and Scientology are absolutly hilarious and that both of them are worthy of winning the "delusional awards" I have to go with the Raëlians.

How can you not love them ?

And they make a gorgeous couple to. I would love to have them over for dinner at my place we would talk for hours and I would love to meet their 12 clonekids.

I really want this swastica/davidstar necklace to.

My personal favorite will

My personal favorite will always be the Roman Catholics.  I can't help it, I feel bound to them and their crazy beliefs and the stupidly large number of followers and what they are willing to do.  It blows my mind.

My favourite has to be the Breatharians.  I'm not entirely sure it's a unified cult, but certainly anyone who thinks they can live off of just air (and sometimes water), classifies as humorous in my books.  Of course, the fact that all the people who've gone out to prove that they can be Breatharians are dead (just do a google search) only adds to the hilarity.

What about "Heaven's

What about "Heaven's Gate"?

Quote:

Heaven's Gate was the name of an American religious group led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The group's end coincided with the appearance of Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997. Applewhite convinced thirty-eight followers to commit suicide so that their souls could take a ride on a spaceship that they believed was hiding behind the comet carrying Jesus.

In preparing to kill themselves, members of the group drank citrus juices to ritually cleanse their bodies of impurities. The suicide was accomplished by ingestion of phenobarbital mixed with vodka, along with plastic bags secured around their heads to induce asphyxiation. They were found lying neatly in their own bunk beds, with their faces and torsos covered by a square, purple cloth. Each member carried five dollars in quarters in their pockets. All 39 were dressed in identical black shirts and sweat pants, brand new black-and-white Nike tennis shoes, and armband patches reading "Heaven's Gate Away Team."

One of the many things I find humorous about this is that they each carried $5 in US quarters in their pockets.

What the heck good is American currency to aliens?  Why did it have to be quarters?  Dimes, Nickels, 50 cent pieces, and paper bills are unnaceptable?  And how are their souls going to take it with them?

Sorry to break with the

Sorry to break with the facetious nature of this thread but my vote goes to the Branch Davidians for blowing the shit out of that corrupt and devious Federal law enforcement agency known as the BATF. In spite of overwhelming odds the Davidians showed that they had the balls to fight back.

You know ATF, the law enforcement agency whose rules of engagement echoed those of the Christian crusaders... "Kill all of them, God will recognize his own!"

Let me be clear, as an atheist I have nothing in common with this admittedly bizarre religious group nor do I support any of its alledged illegal activities.

Nevertheless I could never condone the police state tactics used against them. Hell the Russians used more "humanitarian" methods against the Chechens and the Russians were fucking brutal.

I just fucking hate bullies, no matter who the victims are.

Can you say overkill ?

I lived in Northeast Texas when that was going on.  I even drove through Waco when the standoff was going on.

My father was a rancher and had one corner of his pasture that he dragged dead cow bodies to rot.  I collected some old cow bones from that area and gave them to an artistic friend who was attending art school.

In the art building they had a display area where one feature piece of art was exhibited for each month.  After the Branch Davidian thing happened he constructed a cross, used the bones I gave him and attached them to the cross, put a bullet hole and fake blood around the hole in the skull, and had scorched and broken bricks laying around the bottom of the cross.

He named the piece "David Koresh".  Implying that David was "crucified" by the US for claiming to be god just like the Roman empire crucified jesus for claiming to be god(in an around-abouts way).  It made several newspapers around there.

Pissed off a lot of people here in the Bible Belt.  I overheard my religious parents bitching about it.  They had no idea that those bones came from their very own pasture.  lol

I agree that a lot of those

I agree that a lot of those Raelian women are hot - and they don't have any of the sex taboos most religions do. BTW defending the Branch Davidians is just plain retarded - and I don't mean 50-year-old-guy-bagging-groceries-in-the store retarded, I mean shit in your pants retarded. They abused their children and killed several federal agents after stocking up on illegal weapons. Defending them is a right-wing irrational precept.

My comments in regard to

My comments in regard to the Raelians circa April, 2007:

The Raelians have the hottest chicks besides women that are just atheists.

Plus, one of their charities is allegedly fixing female circumcisions performed by muslims. Even if the fix is superficial, at least they're trying.

It's just that whole visited by aliens that taught us how to clone people stuff that requires a 'rocket launch of faith'. I'm incapable of that kind of faith.

Hmmm. YAY!

Depends how you like your women I guess.

Raelian women = bathed, eat healthy, and deluded

FSM piratettes = raunchy, pasta eating, and deluded

[best Jason Mewes impersonation]They're all sluts. BAONG![end impersonation]

I think a Raelian woman would expect you to do the work while a FSM chick would throw you down and TAKE it. Just my guess. It's all speculation.

BTW, I have the Playboy issue with the story and an interview with Rael.

Atheist Books, purchases on Amazon support the Rational Response Squad server, which houses Celebrity Atheists.

Matt, my good man, you need to chill out and let go of the "right wing" conspiracy bullshit. I never said that they weren't guilty of crimes. Technically, crimes of child abuse are not within the jurisdiction of the BATF and (rarely ) the FBI. That would fall strictly within the realm of local Child Protective Services.

The illegal weapons charge may in fact be completely true but the ATF nevertheless violated the rules of engagement by blindly firing into the plywood structure without having visually identified their targets first. It was common knowledge among the ATF that there were many children and elderly inside the compound and to fire indiscriminately constitutes a breach of the ROE, in other words they broke the law regarding the use of deadly force.

Also, if there were no questionable aspects in regard to the performance of law enforcement why would the House of Representatives bother spending millions of dollars to hold hearings, question witnesses, examine evidence, etc if there were not in fact compelling reasons to do so ?

Incidentally all of the surviving Davidians were aquitted of attempting to murder Federal agents and faced only voluntary manslaughter charges.

If you believe that the ruthless procedures used by both the ATF and the FBI against an admittedly apocalytic cult were an appropriate use of law enforcement then you are truly a demented dude.

If you do in fact condone their actions against the Davidians then perhaps you consider the Massacre at My Lai to be no big deal either ? After all those lousy Vietnamese villagers were very likely giving aid and comfort to the VC, serves them right to get shot down to the last little squirming infant. Fuck the rules of engagement, right ? ...ends justifies the means ?

BTW if you are ever falsely accused of being a child abuser or posseser of illegal firearms I hope for your sake that you are not apprehended by law enforcement using the same methods, if so you presence on this forum will be sorely missed.

I wanna ear the story.

I use to know a raëlian coulpe ("know" is a big word let's say I saw them a couple of time) and they were the nicest people. What was funny about them is that anytime you went to their place, there was always a porn movie playing in the VCR (yeah VCR... it was a long time ago).

I don't know if the translation is accurate since I don't speak arabic, but if it is. Bravo Islam !

At least we owe the first Big Bang model to a roman Catholic priest. Islam couldn't come up with shit scientifically these days.

Okay, shortly after I did

Okay, shortly after I did my blasphemy challenge, the raelians appeared and started to do the same thing. I thought it would be cool to go to one of their meetings and tape a bunch of them in one place doing the challenge.

I spoke with sapient and he said he was cool with the idea,  contacted the raelians through the lady's video that you posted and I was invited to one of their seminars here in Toronto. When I showed up it was about 10 people, most of them from Quebec. They spoke a bit about their beliefs, had a group meditation, showed a bunch of pictures on a projection screen and just hung out for a bit and socialized. No one took the challenge on my camera but they used my idea later at other raelian meetings.

I was then invited to a "sensual potluck", which is a party where everybody brings food that is supposed to look, smell, feel and taste good. To enhance the senses, no one said or implied that it would turn into an orgy, but i wouldn't have been surprised if some starting having fun with each other. I never went however for various reasons.

Overall they were very nice and polite people, friendly even.

My favorite religious belief is the Big Heads of the Iroquois Indians.

The Big Heads were demon gods. They were giand heads without bodies that flew around in storms. They ate livestock and people.

Sounds like those Iroquois Indians might have gotten ahold of some bad LSD.

By think you mean think like you do.

My complaints were focused upon the heavy-handed methods of the government and their paramilitary over-kill. No matter how obscene the Davidians were they didn't deserve to be cornered like rats and baited into a war that they were sure to lose.

My concern was for the innocent children who were considered legitimate targets of the government's wrath. If you can't see the difference then that is your problem.

When Russian President Vladimir Putin conducted his "rescue" operation to free the child hostages during the Beslan School crisis his paramiltary forces were vilified in the local press for the reckless disregard they displayed for the lives of the innocent hostages being held by the Chechens. When the desire for victory means that the innocent are killed along with the guilty then that constitutes a war crime.

American counter-terrorist forces such as the FBI Hostage Rescue Team are no less exempt from that moral obligation. If they fail to observe those guidelines then they cease to be the "good guys" and become government thugs.

I'm sure he didn't mean it as bad as you took it.  On your side, I thought his post was a little out of bounds in regard to both mine and your posts on the Branch Davidians.  However, that's no big deal.  It wasn't anything big and is easy to let slide.  Don't ratchet it up with going even further out of bounds in response with his post.

Let's not start a war here, eh?

No offense Subdi Visions but working for the government could mean anything from being a postal carrier to being a high ranking General working within the bowels of the Pentagon. You failed to clarify your job description and why it would it would provide you with any special insights concerning the Waco debacle.

I never attempted to put a spin on the Davidians or attempted to portray them as anything but who they actually were....cultists.

They were criminal suspects who were dealt with in a most brutal fashion and under circumstance that were shrouded in much mystery and confusion, hence the Congressional investigation which attempted to sort out the governments own misgivings concerning ATF's / FBI's behaviour toward the captive Davidians.

For some peculiar reason the surviving Davidians who fired back at the agents were not prosecuted by the GOVERMENT for murder but only for "voluntary manslaughter" which indicates mitigating circumstances...can you guess what those mitigating circumstances could have been ? ( answer: self defense under special circumstances )

I reject acts of governmental genocide / brutality no matter who the victims were, cultists or otherwise,

During highly publicised matters of malfeasance most government agencies act solely in their own interest in order to maintain their credability with the public that they supposedly "serve". And rarely do government offenders endure any real repercussion for their "mistakes":

BTW, having Law Enforcement investigate the wrongdoings of its own agents is as foolish as having John Gotti investigate the wrong doings of the New York Mafia. Can you say Conflict of Interest ?

As far as my scathing tone I was very legitimatly replying in kind to my fellow atheist, MattShizzle, who at that time determined to phrase his reply to me in a most "retarded" and totally fucked up way. That's just who he is, apparently..whatever.

As it is sometimes stated by RRS staff to the more delicate member of this forum, if you can't stand to have invective thrown in your face then perhaps this forum isn't the place for you. Well at least for the moment I felt like being a monkey at the zoo and I decided to reach behind my ass and fling some shit right back at a fellow shit-slinger.

Incidentally I went and removed the more heated terminology from my reply to Subdi Visions because I later felt that it was unwarranted since he addressed me in a much more respectful way.

( EDIT: I ProzacDeathWish publicly apologize to SV for my severe over-reaction to his measured comments and concede that I was indeed the guilty party in our exchange and that he bears no responsibility for provoking me. Please accept my gesture of contrition. )

In general terms, I don't take kindly to childish insults whether they come from atheists, theists or anyone else....talk to me as an adult and I take no offense, talk to me like I'm a "retard" and my vocabulary undergoes a profound change.

Anyone else want to rationalize away my point of view feel free to do so, knock yourself out.

Peace.

Let's just calm down a notch.

[EDITED TO REFLECT EDITED QUOTED POST]

Yes, Watcher, duly noted on my part. My apologies to offended parties.

LOL, us Canadians, with our politness and our bagged milk.

I've been meaning to ask someone about this: is it just BC that doesn't have bagged milk anymore? I was sort of broken up about this...

Ontario still has bagged

Ontario still has bagged milk. Can't speak for the other 11 p's and t's. I don't know what I'd do if milk ever stopped coming in bags.

Back on topic: My favourite

Back on topic:

My favourite religion of the past would have to be that of the Ancient Egyptians. Think about it - if you were the pharaoh, you had so much power you could convince your people to bury you with all your stuff. And with your servants too. Pharaohs had it made.

Of the present, I'll be boring and say Scientology. But come on! El Ron said all of those things about religion, was proven a complete nutjob, wrote SCIENCE FICTION for a living, and yet still managed to convince people to give him money for his unbelievable crap. He is my hero! Eye-wink Then again, I think Tom Cruise is letting the side down a little. While I admit that Scientology breaks any capacity you have for reasoning, he could at least *try* to look sane.

And of the future, my favourite cult will be the Cult of nen. Essentially I, as lord supreme of the Earth, will guarantee the immortality of your soul so long as you wait on me hand and foot throughout my mortal life to accomplish my every desire.

It will be awesome.

Come on now ! You can do better than that !

Why satisfy yourself only with earth while there is a whole universe to conquer and maybe even more than one universe ?

Haven't you learned anything from L Ron ?

He knows what have happen on a cosmic scale since the last 4 quadrillion years.

pfff ! Earth !

Pitiful cult leader you are !

Heavens Gate

I'll have to go with Heavens gate. Interesting how you can get people to believe such a far out thing like a UFO chasing a comet and that they need to buy new Nike shoes, carry $5 in quarters, etc and commit a mass suicide. I'll give an honerable mention to the mormon church and $cientology as well as Warren Jeff's Fundamentalist LDS church. Nothing like Warren Jeff getting arresting in Las Vegas (where he forbade his followers to go) after a traffic stop where he was driving a red SUV (he also preached to his followers about not driving a red car).

AH HA!

That neopagan discordianism thing.  Has anyone ever read some of the stuff in their book.  Man, it's great.  Classic even.
