Did any songs help you through the deconversion process?

If so, what songs, and why?
Specifically, I'm looking for songs that can, and have, helped people on an emotional level as they abandon their religion.

Imagine, by John Lennon.

Imagine, by John Lennon. Though it did not help me with deconverting, as I deconverted early without much trouble, that song helped me stay atheist. Well, it sort of did. Reasons... I don't have many, just download and hear it yourself.

"When I die I shall be content to vanish into nothingness.... No show, however good, could conceivably be good forever.... I do not believe in immortality, and have no desire for it." ~H.L. Mencken

Thank god i'm a atheist!

When I ask this, I'm specifically looking for emotional support. Often, deconversion is a traumatic experience, and some songs seem to be specifically tailored towards comforting one who just lost something, specifically their faith. I've seen a few around, but I'd like more.

I'll give a few I suppose.

I'll give a few I suppose. These songs aren't necessarily ABOUT deconversion, but I find there is something about the lyrics and the mood of the songs that seems to speak to that effect. These are some songs that I've enjoyed in my journey to atheism.

If you google the lyrics to these and try to interpret them from the perspective of a person undergoing (or having recently undergone) a deconversion, then you will probably be able to see how they seem to fit.

Of course, it's better if you hear them.

Is This the Best It Gets? - Budapest

  The World I Know - Collective Soul

Omaha - Counting Crows

No One's Listening Anyway - Goo Goo Dolls

 Made to Heal - Our Lady Peace

In Anger - Thinktank

And for some comedy relief:

Jesus Was Way Cool - King Missile

A place common to all will be maintained by none. A religion common to all is perhaps not much different.

It was emotional support. It helped me from converting back to theist many times in my past.

Some of Dan Barker's songs

Some of Dan Barker's songs would be good - specifically "Life is Good."

Can't remember many songs

Can't remember many songs that helped back then, but 2 definatley did.

The God that failed - Metallica (even though it's not really about what the title sounds like.)

Fade to Black - Metallica (again not directly related, but helped me through rough times when being judged by xians, and losing friends over being atheist)

Nowadays there are a couple songs I can think of with an athiestic view point that would help:

Cult - Slayer http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/488270.html

Judith - A Perfect Circle http://www.lyricsondemand.com/a/aperfectcirclelyrics/judithlyrics.html

"They always say the same thing; 'But evolution is only a theory!!' Which is true, I guess, and it's good they say that I think, it gives you hope that they feel the same about the theory of Gravity and they might just float the f**k away."

Lyrics to Life is

Lyrics to Life is Good:

Life Is Good!
By Dan Barker. © 1992 by Dan Barker
Chorus: Life is good! Life is good!
Life is unbelievably good!
The superstitious monkey is off my back.
I’m thinking for myself, and I am back on track;
And I can tell you—Life is good!
They used to tell me that I was condemned
To be punished for eternity;
But not to be sad—I should be glad,
Because Jesus has set me free.
Then I started thinking, “Pardon me?
But something here is totally wrong!”
It makes me happier to learn
that I don’t need to be forgiven—
I was innocent all along!

How can I be free if I must die to myself
To be a slave to a dictator’s will?
How can I be happy if I think that my friends
And my loved ones might end up in hell?
How can I be glad if I am always afraid
That I haven’t measured up like I should?
The day that I abandoned all of the above
Is when I truly learned that life is good.

Giving up religion was a real smart move
From the ridiculous to the sublime.
Living a life of learning and love
And laughter is certainly no crime.
What a great feeling to be finally free,
Not needing a Master or Lord!
Every breath that I breathe belongs to me,
And life is its own reward.

This is going to sound very

This is going to sound very silly but ...

"My Foolish Heart" & "I Loves You, Porgy" by Bill Evans;

"Shout" by Tears for Fears;

Oboe Concertos No. 5 in C Major (composed by Tomaso Albinoni) &;

(you're going to think I'm crazy), but the song, "Let me tell you about my boat" by Mark Mothersbaugh (which was featured in the Wes Anderson film, the Life Aquatic)

I'm off myspace.com so you can only find me here: http://geoffreymgolia.blogspot.com
