With less than three weeks before the midterm Congressional elections, the pressing issues of Iraq, the war on terrorism, and possible military confrontation with Iran are on voters' minds. Many voters, however, say their opinion on Middle East issues is strongly influenced by the media and by religion. According to a just-released Zogby International poll, conducted for the Council for the National Interest, nearly a third (31 percent) of likely American voters believe in Christian Zionism, as defined as "a belief that Israel must have all of the promised land, including Jerusalem, to facilitate the second coming of the messiah." The full results of the poll are available at: http://www.cnionline.org/learn/polls/czandlobby/.

This twentieth Capitol Hill "public hearing" sponsored by the Council for the National Interest will feature leading experts on the possible influence of the Christian Zionist movement in the upcoming elections.

Robert O. Smith is Lutheran Campus Pastor for the University of Chicago (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a doctoral fellow in Religion, Politics, & Society through Baylor University (Waco, Tex.). With Charles P. Lutz, he is author of "Christians and a Land Called Holy: How We Can Foster Justice, Peace, and Hope" (Fortress, 2006). Smith is a co-convener of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod Working Group on Religious Extremism.

Rammy M. Haija is the Vice-Chairman for the Initiative on Middle East Research & Dialogue (IMERD), a research initiative dedicated toward fostering scholarly discussion on issues pertinent to the Middle East. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at Radford University in Virginia, while concurrently a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. At Radford he also serves as a faculty member of the Peace Studies program.
