Christians and feminists

Why do people like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell hate feminists so much?

Is there something in the Bible that goes against feminists?

If the USA became a Christian society, what would happen to the feminists and their agenda?

No, I am not a woman, just curious about this.

Most fundies think the woman should be subservient to the husband, I`ll have to dig up the exact verses for you if you like.

Probably 1 Timothy 2:12, but

Probably 1 Timothy 2:12, but I am not so sure. It is probably that one that says women should be obedient of their husbands. Timothy also says women shouldn't be allowed to teach.

Good list, Stuntgibbon. For

Good list, Stuntgibbon.

For the record, in the Gospels women are surprisingly prominent among Jesus's followers and he brings them into active roles. Jesus never says anything in the gospels about women being subservient.

It wasn't until hundreds of years after the crucifixion when Paul's followers who never met Jesus wrote the late epistles (Ephesians, Colossians, Timothy, Titus, Peter) that all the injunctions against women speaking in church and having their heads uncovered arise.

There's even a persuasive argument that 1Cor 13:34-5 was added into Paul's original epistle by later writers who had a political addenda keeping women out of the priesthood.  There were women priests all over Christendom throughout the medieval period and even a woman pope for awhile, but the official church finally managed to track down and burn them all or drive them underground.

Just another example of people making up religious excuses for their own political agendas.

Modern fundies are against feminism because feminism is associated with liberal political movements, rights for women, abortion rights, and in some of its more radical places acceptance for lesbians and religious rights for pagans.

In every known instance of fundamentalist theocracies, women are reduced to the role of second class citizens at best, or to the status of property at worst.

Islam springs to mind, but even in early U.S. history, puritan husbands had legal responsibility for their wives, automatically got ownership of some of her property, and was expected to beat her regularly to keep her in line.

In modern theocracies like the Mormon splinter group called the "FLDS" girls as young as 13 are routinely married off to older men who already have many wives without having any say in the matter. It's statutory rape according to the laws of Utah and Arizona where the group is, but it's consistent with Biblical principles.

Hundreds of years? Try "about 30 years". The letters of Paul (and the many that he didn't write) were all written by approximately 65 CE. The oldest gospel, Mark, could not have been written earlier than 70 CE.

They have outposts in BC and Alberta too.

As for why fundamentalists hate feminists...well, feminists are good. Fundies hate all that is good. Simple. [/black&white theist-ish thinking]

Real reason: A combination of things said here, plus something inherent in fundamentalist christianity. That is, a fear of change. True conservatism. Feminism is about bringing about gender equality and abolishing gender roles, which is a change.

OK, I'll made a concession:they don't hate ALL change. If other people changed to become conservative christians like them, they'd be happy.

I think it starts with Eve causing the fall of mankind and it heads downhill from there..

Pat and Jerry just want to

Pat and Jerry just want to stay in power. As men, they want to rule women. This is the same as them saying "Weve got the penises, so F*ck you." However, what they fail to realize, is that those ideas that were so prominent in every culture(most notably in the middle east, where Female genital mutilation is abundant, and where every man is too lazy to please their wife) are all out of date, and that now, every woman can almost do any job that a man can do, and just as easily. Infact, ive seen women who are actually stronger than most men, both physically and mentally. Just because they cant accept those truths, doesnt mean they can rely on the gospel to feed thier biggotry.

The gospel is full of this shit. Women are the slaves of men, and women have no rights in the bible.  Of course, to follow this, while rejecting the laws that tell you to stone your disobediant children, is complete hypocricy and cherry picking. But then again, christians love their cherries.

The USA will never become a christian society... Unless they throw out the first amendment. But, then again, the PATRIOT act pretty much does that already. This is what we get for having a christian Attorney general.

I'm infallible. I don't know why you can't remember that.
