Nintendo is now trash

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-09-14-nintendo-requires-weekly-online-check-in-to-play-nes-games

This same move nearly killed the XBox 1 in the leadup to its release. The console never fully recovered from the backlash. Now Nintendo decides to pull this shit AFTER it had already sold consoles to millions of people. False advertising and betrayal. I'll never support another Nintendo product unless they reverse this decision.

It is 2018, I didn't know

It is 2018, I didn't know there was anyone not permanantly online. Yeah sure in 2004 with half life 2 and requiring steam it was an issue but I think today the expectation is everyone has internet. Its not an excuse for a lack of prior warning but I can see why it would be seen as a non issue. Worst case turn your phone  into a hot spot, it says a check in, so it won't take much data if you have that limtation.

lol you say that when the

lol you say that when the Xbox 1 DIED over this exact issue. Well not exact MS was even worse but pretty damn close.

There is 0 excuse for always online requirements. Not everyone in North America even has internet, let alone stable always on internet. This is unacceptable and Nintendo is trash because of it.

 I don't necessarily

I don't necessarily disagree, I would say it died because it was objectively the worse product for far more reasons than just that reason though. But these things should be advertised in advance. But beyond that it's an unnecessary hindrance. It is anti consumer so I certainly don't think it's a good practise.

It does surprise me that not everyone has Internet access though. I do live in South Africa and recently we started getting these routers that take a sim card. On a good day the speed is as fast as fiber on a bad day maybe 2mbs. Its about 70 us cents per gig for data. Surely you guys have this or something similar, it is very affordable as long as you aren't watching HD movies. I cannot have adsl because my land lord is a dick so I use this. Canada and the US must have something similar. These days an Internet connection just seems a must for gaming. I am assuming non absolute poverty wages here obviously. But I would assume if you can afford a console you can afford Internet.

Not everyone wants internet.

Not everyone wants internet. Generally older people but there's a lot of younger people who's only use for internet is gaming, if even that.

It costs me about $100/mo for unlimited at home. Most times I run a speed test I get about 45mbs download and 15 upload. Sometimes goes as high as 115 download but it isn't common. But I have a decent job and semi-decent rent. Anyone below the poverty line is giving something up to have internet. A lot of people don't. I currently work as tech support for a cable company, and maybe half the customers I service do not have internet. Approximately 40% of them have no cell phone, a statistic I actually can track myself.
