yeah, that's no newsflash. i mean, the people in that photo are clearly out of the late '70s, early '80s.
you can see how they were probably meant to look because a group of archeologists restored a few of them some years ago. they stood on pedestals, had big striking eyes, and strange cylindrical hats on their heads. they originally formed a perimeter around the island, facing out to sea like sentries.

Comment section is also an interesting read. One guy said this practice desemated the islands forest and that lead to no heat, etc. until eventually the people died out. If true that makes an interesting study showing our dependence on a sky daddy, whoops I mean on our environment is critical.
