Quote:
The Beagleys are the parents of Raylene Worthington, who along with her husband were acquitted of manslaughter last year in the March 2008 death of their 15-month-old daughter, Ava, from pneumonia and a blood infection. Her husband, Carl Brent Worthington, was convicted of misdemeanor criminal mistreatment.

Also were at girl's death
The Beagleys were present at the death of their granddaughter, laying on hands after anointing her with oil and praying for her to be healed instead of seeking medical care that church members avoid.

That speaks volumes about both cases.

This is a clear case where

This is a clear case where true harm has been shown as a direct result of irrational beliefs.

My biggest problem is that I think 18 months is way too lenient for people who were entrusted with teh care of a child and through neglect caused its death.

Oregon is my home

I followed both cases.  The mother was acquitted in the little girl's case because she is one of those who believe she should do what her husband wants her to do.  Sigh.  Since the little girl had a visible tumor on her neck, I thought both parents should have been convicted and for longer sentences.  I had a friend tell me I didn't understand how ignorant these people are and how thoroughly the women are conditioned to obey their husbands.

For the teen, however, I think I am vindicated.  The police collected the parent's computer as evidence that they had searched the internet for information on his condition.  They were not ignorant.  I just put a dog down due to kidney failure.  Unlike what the defense tried to show during the trial, you can not miss that the victim is in deep physical distress.  The week before I decided to euthanize my dog, he could not eat or drink.  When he tried, he threw up and was so weak he would fall after vomiting and could not get up.  Their son was just as ill from the descriptions.  There is no way you could not notice that he was in serious trouble and it wasn't "just the influenza".

Their cult has a very high child death rate.  The change in the law was specifically targeting this cult.  The law as it previously read allowed for a religious exemption if not seeking health care for a child.  It was odd as there is a law on the books concerning child abuse and neglect.  So it was okay to allow your child to die from an untreated, neglected medical condition, but not from neglect to feed or shelter them.  I don't care if an adult manages to kill themselves through neglect, but they should not also be allowed to kill their children.  I hope this sends a clear message to the rest of the cult members.

This a great post... thank you..

Christopher Hitchens.. also exposed us to the activities of the said Saint "Mother Theresa " available on you tube ..
who seemed to want to effect the egress of people in her care (and I use the word care in the loosest possible sense) from the living world, rather than actually administer real and proper medical attention.
I am glad to say that in her final years she declared that God had never actually spoken to her.. well at least she was honest , even though she was responsible for the deaths of so many,  due to a misguided and "in the face of modern understanding of medicine" rejection of real help.

It definitely highlights what is admissible behaviour under the umbrella of Religion..

I think to many of us,  these people appear very disturbed,  but they are only products of the previous generation (their parents),
the fact they have children is very very frightening, but this will continue,  until religion acquires  the same reputation as
the practice of voodoo.

and again thanks for a great post..

I am from Oregon as well

I remember the bill being passed.  As CJ put it, it was specifically for this particular group.  What is just sick is that people not only can watch their grandchild die, then do the same to their own child.

Something tells me that they are not pro-choice when it comes to abortion.

It was disconcerting to me

It was disconcerting to me when my mother a few years back had to have a neck operation, to look up in the neurologist's office wall, before the operation, when she was being consulted by the doctor, too see a painting on his wall, of Jesus standing behind a doctor. The implication was that Jesus was guiding the doctor's hands.

I like what Captain Sully said after the Hudson river landing when asked if he said a prayer, "I didn't have time".

It is one thing to believe in magical invisible brains, but when the shit hits the fan in a life threatening situation, you need to park that bullshit and focus on the job at hand. ESPECIALLY when it comes to kids who are not developed enough to make their own decisions.

If you want to believe that god will save your kid, that still does not give you the right to put their lives in danger.
