Newbie Intro

Hi, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself here on RSS. As a child growing up I was rasised in an evangelical church. I was a "true believer" for most of my early years. I am hoping to make up for lost time! As I got older my views matured and I became more and more scheptical of the bible and of religion in general. By the time I got to college many of my beliefs were being challanged and I was begining to explore more openly what I really believed. I tried to be the nominal christian but that did not work out. I felt dishonest. So no I have come to a point where theistic belief of any kind makes no sense to me at all. It was great to find out their was a group of people who thought like I do.

Enjoy.

It's a bigger club than you might think.  Welcome!

Welcome!And fear not, there

Welcome!

And fear not, there are entire cities, and indeed, entire countries that think like you think. There are people out there (like me) to whom meeting someone who takes religion, any religion, even remotely seriously, is as rare an experience as it is for some people (maybe like you?) to meet someone who actually calls themselves an atheist.

Well I was born an original sinner
I was spawned from original sin
And if I had a dollar bill for all the things I've done
There'd be a mountain of money piled up to my chin

Well, not so fast. Anyone can call themselves an atheist.

Many here have run into people claiming to be former atheists and once you scratch the surfice it merely turns out they say, "I missunderstood the teachings of god". Then there are the people who dont buy the god claims but dont know why. I call them easy pickings for any slick apologist.

Just as there are no "true" Christians there are no "true" atheists. HOWEVER, there ARE better lines of logic and evidence one can demonstrate in the ability to hold a position.

In recent times I have run into a couple "atheists" and I am sure that they dont buy god claims. BUT, they dont have the background in use of logic, they don't know Bentrand Russard's Teapot, they don't know law of probibility, or second law. They certainly are atheists, you could make that case, but they are not ones I would want challenging theists.

No sense in the bravado if all your bring to a gunfight is a knife.

Welcome jz1120!Huh? No, I am

Welcome jz1120!

Huh? No, I am not clicking on that link. Mods?

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, | As I foretold you, were all spirits, and | Are melted into air, into thin air; | And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, | The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, | The solemn temples, the great globe itself, - Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, | And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, | Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff | As dreams are made on, and our little life | Is rounded with a sleep. - Shakespeare

Howdy, Newbie! Being pretty

Howdy, Newbie! Being pretty much a newbie myself, I can say that these folks are warm. friendly, and diverse. They ain't the feral baby eaters theists sometimes make 'em ( or is that us? ) out to be.

Oh, oh, oh! How about the ones that say " I don't believe in God 'cause God doesn't believe in me. " as the grounds for their ' atheism '? How I've wanted to bitch slap a couple of people for using that line!

Well did you read what I wrote at all Brian? I was saying I can imagine that some people rarely, if ever, meet any atheists. That was my point. That some places they are very rare, just like theists are very rare here.

Here, the reverse of what you descripe happen quite often. I'll run into someone who calls themselves a Christian, but then when I ask them: "Oh, so do you believe in God?" They at first just look puzzled and then say: "Oh no no no, of course not, that's just silly old myths! I'm just a cultural Christian, meaning, I celebrate Christmas, and I go to church exactly twice in my life: for babtism, and bourial. But believe in God? Of course not. You might as well have asked me if I believe in Santa Claus"

Well I was born an original sinner
I was spawned from original sin
And if I had a dollar bill for all the things I've done
There'd be a mountain of money piled up to my chin
