Visual cognition experiment

This experiment has the potential to be really cool, but only on the condition that you don't read anything below the link before you watch the video.  Trust me, this will not work unless you watch the video in the link below prior to reading the end of this post.  I promise that this is not one of those "heart attack" videos where something jumps out and screams while you're focusing on an image.  It's not a RickRoll either.

When you start the video, you'll see that there are two teams--a white team and a black team--moving around and passing a few basketballs to each other.  Your goal is to count the number of passes made between members of the white team.  When you get done, scroll down and answer the two questions at the bottom of this post (do not read them before you watch the video).  Good luck!

1. How many passes did the white team make?

2. How many gorillas were there?

1. I counted 15 passes2.

1. I counted 15 passes

2. Gorilla??? (had a second look to confirm)

On reflection, I suspect I didn't see the gorilla because I was deliberately ignoring everything that was black and moving.

 Oh, I've done this exact

Oh, I've done this exact experiment before. I had the number of passes right, but I didn't see the gorilla.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, | As I foretold you, were all spirits, and | Are melted into air, into thin air; | And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, | The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, | The solemn temples, the great globe itself, - Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, | And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, | Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff | As dreams are made on, and our little life | Is rounded with a sleep. - Shakespeare

1. 152. 1I've done this one

1. 15

2. 1

I've done this one before. Most people do not notice the gorilla, until it is pointed out to them. There is a better visual cognitiion experiment involving two magicians who are shuffling decks of cards, and you have to watch for the card they pick. While they are shuffling cards, the backdrop color keeps changing (the curtain behind them), they replace the clothes they are wearing and very few people notice. The first version of this experiment was the "door man" experiment where an experimenter would ask a subject for directions, then two men holding a door with a person hidden behind it would move between them under the guise of transporting the door. The original experimenter would get on, and hide behind the door as it moved off, and the new experimenter would jump off and replace him. I don't have the exact figures for the number who noticed.

"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. It is preposterous to assert that the process of systematic scientific reasoning arbitrarily excludes “non-physical explanations” because the very notion of “non-physical explanation” is contradictory.

I'd seen this before, but I

I'd seen this before, but I missed the gorilla the first time round.  Couldn't believe it at first.  I actually wound the video back to watch it through again to make sure I wasn't being duped the first time Smiling

Humm

 1. 14 passes. I think.

2. I saw someone "Dressed" as s gorilla, though I don't think that she was on the white team or the black team.

god -- I tried you on for size.... you were a little long in the crotch, loose in the waist, short in the length and you made my butt look extra flat. I had to take you back for an exchange.

I saw this before and I

I saw this before and I never noticed the gorilla until it was pointed out. I also couldn't really keep track of how many passes there were.

It takes good visual cognition to tell if somebody in a gorilla suit is female.

Does anyone know if there's

Does anyone know if there's a personality/thinking type that makes you more or less likely to notice this? To me the gorilla was as obvious as if the entire screen had changed to a porno movie.

1) 15 passes. One was vertical to the camera, hard to see, but not a problem for a focused mind.
2) Uhm...what gorilla? *seeing the video for third time* Oh, crap.
That's the problem with me, I see only what I want to see, and I have to check for things I seek several times. This is the case from the WTFDWK film, I don't know if the Indians didn't see the ships of Columbus or just ignored them, but if I'd be there, I certainly wouldn't see them literally.

I wonder how many of the

I wonder how many of the guys would have noticed if it had been a naked woman rather than a guy in a gorilla suit...

Like I said, I can't fathom how someone could have not noticed.

How did you count the passes? The reason I didn't see the gorilla is directly linked to how I counted the passes, I blanked out black things on the screen, how did you count the passes if you were not focussing your mind to ignore the black team?

They all looked white to me.

They all looked white to me. Anyway as soon as it appeared my attention focused to it. My mind does tend to shift very quickly to something unusual or unexpected (I would say this would be an evolutionary advantage thing - noticing an unexpected threat would be beneficial. )

I could never do those -

I could never do those - being blind in one eye is a definite disadvantage.
