I found this article very interesting. It brings out thoughts on a possible correlation with religion that wasn't specifically examined in the study.

The Authoritarian Specter by Robert Altemeyer (Hardcover - Nov 15, 1996) This book is not the easiest read in the world -- it's quite technical in places -- but it explains a LOT more about this sort of thing. I can't recommend it highly enough.
