Thoughts about christians.

It would seem that people that call themselves christian don't understand or are not familiar with the bible. Out of the people I've been talking to lately most Christians have not read the bible usually not completely and some not at all. It seems to me that these people put on the christian hat to reap the benefits of a christian culture. i.e. Christian schools, sporting events, the pooling of money, business connections, mentoring, counseling. These "Christians" do nothing more than cherry pick the good things from the bible to selfishly fulfill their own lives. And they will fight you to the death to defend christianity not to defend thier God but to defend thier way of life, thier means of success. What do you think? How can I word this better?

I get what you're saying. There is a huge amount of christians who really just call themself that because it was their parents religion. They might go to church occasionaly, and haven't read more than 5% of the bible. They are immensely annoying, as they live a lifestyle that will probably get them into hell anyway, but still try to defend christianity and impede scientific progress.
This is pretty much another moderates vs fundy debate.

RagenGaijin I understand what you are saying.
I believe that for many christians their so called belief is nothing more then a cultural 'habit'. And as most people have a desire to fit in and be accepted, we would be hard pressed to find 'true christians' due to a persons hesitation to go against the beliefs of their neighbors/family/schoolmates etc.

Yeah, I figured if I was saying something considered stupid or something taht has already been said I would catch less flak for putting it in here.
All the RRS author content is fantastic but when it comes to the psychology of the theist mind..have you checked out todangst? http://www.rationalresponders.com/compilation_of_works_from_todangst
maybe you will create a path to your answer through a few of his posts?

As a Christian, I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Too much Christianity is infused with "God wants you to have health, wealth and success". It's dead wrong.
I'd like to know where the Bible says that.
And people like you can spot the inconsistency from the back row.
God is more interested in our Christian character than our personal comfort.
Character is not developed when living a life of ease.
The Bible more often says, "the afflictions of the righteous are many".
Gold is not purified on the sofa, but in the fire.
Interesting hypothesis, one that I have never seen a christian offer. I agree that all christians I know think they should have constant and overwhelming happiness and blessings. Aren't they getting the whole heaven thing? And they want that on earth? Talk about greedy.
Apparently being a christian means you shouldn't have problems.Did they miss the part about 'all men will hate you in my name' (or something) Then again, they do have that ever so annoying persecution complex..I give up on this train of thought

I agree. Asking for heaven on earth and in heaven too is asking a bit much. I think if I could be blameless like Job I would be pretty damn happy (after it was all over). Not that I would want to go threw all that either. It would be good to not have a martyr complex too. Teaching "american prosperity christianity" cant be making God too happy.
