How To Use The Quote Function
Submitted by Susan on May 15, 2007 - 9:43pm.Hi everyone. We've had several questions asking how to use the quote function and how to "pick and choose" parts of previous posts for quoting. I will attempt to illustrate.
At the bottom of the post to which you wish to reply, there are several selections you may choose. One of those choices is "quote". When you click on quote, an edit box comes up with the post pre-populated for you. At the beginning of the text you will see:
[ quote=Susan ] (without the spaces)
Hi there!
At the end of the post you will see [ /quote ] (again, without the spaces)
I had to put the spaces in for instructions or the quote feature in this post would make it look like this:
Hi there!
If you wish to pick and choose or quote multiple posts, just make sure the text you are quoting begins with a left bracket ( [ ) then "quote=" and the user's name and then a right bracket ( ] ). At the end of the text you wish to quote, use a left bracket, then a slash followed by the word "quote", ending with a right bracket.
If you wish to comment between quote, just be sure you have matching beginning and ending quotes.
For instance (again, I'm putting in spaces where you should not):
[ quote=Winston ] I think we should have a four day work week. [ /quote ]
(Then I respond)
I disagree. It should be a three day work week and the pay should be the same.
[ quote=Louise ] Well, I like my job. I wish I could go to work six days a week. [ /quote ]
(I reply)
Louise, you are very lucky, but I suspect you must get paid overtime.
[ quote=EmilyJean ] I love my job, but I wish someone would pay me to take a nap. [ /quote ]
(I reply)
Emily Jean, you are paid to take a nap because you are my cat.
This conversation wil display like this:
I think we should have a four day work week.

You will also notice quotes within quotes. The main thing is to be sure you have matching opening and closing quotes for each post for it to display properly.
If I quote Winston who quoted Emily Jean, the comment box would look like this:
[ quote=Winston ] I prefer Fancy Feast
[ quote=EmilyJean ] I really like Nine Lives [ /quote ]
(then Winston answers EmilyJean's post)
Yeah. I agree.
[ /quote ]
It will display like this:
I prefer Fancy FeastEmilyJean wrote:I really like Nine LivesYeah. I agree.
Hope that helps some of the posters having trouble. Just remember, the Preview Button is your friend! It gives you a chance to see how everything displays so you can fix it before submitting.
