I'm in support of advertising but I'm most certainly in support of placing the ads where they are most visible. Putting this ad in or near a religious article is good placement but what kind of exposure would you get on a quarter-page in USA Today? But that's pretty costly.
There's always freeway blogging.
Ok USA Today doesn't offer it's services through google ads, but the New York Times does. So in the interest of comparing exposure per dollar, I'll break it down, even with the knowledge that we can't afford the ad.
A near quarter page ad in the NY times is $38,884.23 per issue, in any section, they'll pick the cheapest section. If you buy 9 days you can get it for $31,108 per issue. The circulation is 1,114,739 on weekdays and 1,653,778 on Sunday.
We'll compare one weekday in the NY times vs 1 day in the paper I advertised in and the lowball rate I was able to acquire, which would never happen in the NYT.
$31,108 for 1,114,739 readers
$8 for 5,280 readers
New York Times ad: 2.7906 cents per reader
Shit Church paper ad I got: 0.15151 cents per reader.
RRS paid almost 1/10th of a cent per reader, and you've got us paying 2.7906 cents per reader in the big paper.
I therefore have promoted us at a more cost effective level. So applaud us, rather than naysay. Considering that the budget was $10 per day and I still paid my ten to google web ads that day, I'd say the $18 total was enough over budget for me.
