A big list of Gods (but nowhere near all of them)

RationalResponseSquad's picture

Dear God believer,

Why don't you believe in any of the gods below?  Do you know why atheists don't believe in your god?  Atheists don't believe in any of these gods, you don't believe in almost all of them.  We are atheists towards a great many gods together.  Hopefully this list of gods that have all been believed in by some society or culture will help you realize that gods are created by men.

"I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
...Stephen F Roberts

Dazhbog, Perun, and Veles

Dazhbog, Perun, and Veles are my homies.

Theists reject those gods because...

1. The first commandment.

So already they are not rejecting gods individually but en masse.

2. Essentialism is for morons.

It isn't necessary to imagine a God for every silly thing we revere or do not understand. A god for the moon, one for the earth, one for gardening, one for war, another one for basket weaving, one for country music, and one for western. Multitheism is redundant and knee-jerking.

3. They haven't even heard of many of them.

Therefore theists would not in fact understand why you are atheists against monotheism because they are not in fact atheisting (hey it's your concept not mine) against many gods the same way you do.

Your argument is the result of lazy bean-counter reasoning with no substance or meaning invested in it and not surprisingly it turns to dust. If someone else wants to show me the meat and potatoes I'm listening because so far this offering tastes like cardboard.

http://www.rationalresponders.com/comment/reply/3022/227697#comm

Understand first. We (Atheists) equate all gods as the same. We reject gods enmasse also, we just don't leave any out. When I personally have said to a Christian that they are Atheists also for gods other than theirs they have said to me, "But those Gods aren't real !"  But that is the point of this argumnet. All gods are not real. You as a Christian can't understand why we reject your god.

I have had some say to me that Atheists hate God.  I say, do you hate those other gods? No you don't, you don't believe they are real. Neither do we Atheists hate your god. We just don't believe in him either.

To be fair however I have encountered some Christians, usually of the Bible Church type and the Witnesses that have said the other Gods are real, just not gods. They are really just demons or fallen angels, or the Devil in disguise.

When you can understand why you reject those other gods you will understand why we reject yours. Unless you happen to be of the other persuasion and believe they are demons. Then we have no common ground.

really???

I noticed that many are saying that they are aithiest toward other gods, this practice is not aithiesm but monothiesm "belief in one god". As an aithiest i don't like to push my beliefs on others and don't like other beliefs pushed on me; by calling them aithiest you are associating them with people of our belief which is disrespectful to them. We are all different but respect for one another should be universal regardless of belief system.

Thanks!

This list was handy.  It took about 4 facebook posts, but I got the entire list through. I'm sure the Christian will find some slight of hand approach to dismissing the point.

What nonsense

Homework

These lists are always impressively long, but that’s because their contents invariably contain numerous duplicates and errors. Just looking at the Egyptians, Duamutef and Shu both occur twice; and Amen, Amon, and Amun, Aten and Aton, Re and Ra, Sakhmet and Sekhmet, Atum and Tem, Khensu and Khonsu, Anuket and Anqet, Khnum and Khnemu, and Seker and Sokar are all duplicates. And Antaios is a Greek giant, not an Egyptian god! Gods may be temporary, but the need for research - if you want people to accept you know what you're talking about - now, that's permanent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Egyptian_deities

Egyptian gods are tricky as they often merge into each other and can be seen as aspects, facets or manifestations of reality.

Interestingly:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heket

In the myth of Osiris developed, it was said that it was Heqet who breathed life into the new body of Horus at birth, as she was the goddess of the last moments of birth. As the birth of Horus became more intimately associated with the resurrection of Osiris, so Heqet's role became one more closely associated with resurrection. Eventually, this association led to her amulets gaining the phrase I am the resurrection, and consequently the amulets were used by early Christians

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogdoad

In Egyptian mythology, the Ogdoad (Greek "ογδοάς", the eightfold) were eight deities worshipped in Hermopolis during what is called the Old Kingdom, the third through sixth dynasties, dated between 2686 to 2134 BC. First it was a cult having Hathor and Ra; later changing to a cult where Hathor and Thoth were the main deities over a much larger number of deities; and even later, Ra was assimilated into Atum-Ra through a merger with Atum of the Ennead cosmogony.

The concept of an Ogdoad also appears in Gnostic systems of the early Christian era, and was further developed by the theologian Valentinus (ca. 160 AD).

The number eight plays an important part in Gnostic systems, and it is necessary to distinguish three different forms in which it has entered in different stages of the development of Gnosticism.

The earliest Gnostic systems (such as the Ophites) included a theory of seven heavens, and a supercelestial region called the Ogdoad. Astronomical theories had introduced the conception of seven planetary spheres with an eighth above them, the sphere of the fixed stars.

When the Valentinian system had established belief in a still higher place, the supercelestial space was called the middle region (Mesotes); but Ogdoad was clearly its earlier name.

Theists reject...

1)  I've often wondered if the first commandment,"Thou shalt have no other gods before me." is a tacit acknowledgment that other gods exist.

2)  It isn't necessary to imagine a god for any silly thing we revere or do not understand.

 Haha you monotheists suck.

Haha you monotheists suck. May the gods of Rome have mercy on your soul.

 Your comment might be

Your comment might be right about modern day Christians.  However, the commandment that you are referencing in premise 1, does not mean what you think it means.  The verse literally means, "Don't have any gods before me" not don't have any other "gods" just don't worship them above me.  The early Jews were not monotheistic, they were henotheistic, meaning that they acknowledged many gods but only followed one god.  They believed that the god of the old testament was basically their "guy" and that he was a better god to follow than the other gods. So the majority of your comment is correct for modern day Christianity, but that is only because Christians as a whole are lazy. They don't bother to understand the culture and history around their belief, just the cuddly feeling that some guy hanging out in the sky knows them personally.

Did the Buddha speak immediately after he left his mother's womb?

Did he turn half his body into fire and the other half into water?

Was he able to take giant steps and go from one to city to another in as little as 3 steps?

Was he a reborn incarnate?

Did he stop an enraged elephant from crushing a baby with a touch of his hand and did the elephant kneel before him?

Did he expel miraculously all grass and chaff from a well with his word and make the well clean?

none of these necessitates omnipotence, just super powers.  that being said, most buddhist traditions would maintain that a buddha is omnipotent.  however, in the buddhist cosmology, a buddha, bodhisattva, pratyekabuddha, arhat, and in some cases even a mere monk, are above gods because gods are concerned with worldly affairs, and a monk is not.  gods, in hinduism as well as buddhism, are subject to death and subsequent lower rebirths, but a buddha et al are not.

despite the unfortunate word choices of members of the hindu renaissance like vivekananda, sarvepalli radhakirishnan, and gandhi himself, who were writing in english for a western audience, there is no "God" in hinduism at all.  there are gods, but there is no God with a capital "G" like in the monotheistic religions.  the impresonal, monistic brahman emphatically does not fulfill this role.  "God" is above all a creator, ex nihilo, who stands outside of his creation.  there is no creator nor creation ex nihilo in hinduism, and this holds true for buddhism as well, which retained the hindu cosmology.

a buddha is only a buddha, and there is no equivalent, semantically or syntactically, in english, which is why we retain the sanskrit usage.  i wish more writers, especially those of popular "introductions" to indian religions, would make the choice to retain more sanskrit, and include a glossary.  words like buddha, brahman, nirvana, moksa, sunyata, samadhi, etc., should not be translated.  they can be paraphrased in english--anything can be paraphrased in any language--but to assign them equivalents is unnecessary and confusing to the unwary.

oh, and what precisely do you mean by a "reborn incarnate"?  if you're asking if the buddha was an avatar, an incarnation of the absolute brahman, no, he was not, at least according to buddhism, which to my knowledge does not recognize avatars as existing in any of its branches, since it does not recognize the brahman as existing.  however, some hindus, vaishavas in particular, do hold that gautama was an avatar of vishnu, ironically sent to deceive the asuras with false teachings.

"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

Buddhism rejects the idea of

Buddhism rejects the idea of gods as per the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama. All names mentioned of left overs from Hindu and other cultures. They are not worshiped nor do they have the power to create or control humans; although they are respected for the purpose the serve in the Universe.

Many people in Asia are seen bowing and making offerings to such guardians but they do not do so because they believe those are gods; they are more like saints in catholism.

I also see the list for Buddhism claims 10 but there are only 9 stated.

Accordingly, nearly twenty years after Ananda had passed passed into Nirvana, the arhat (according to the prophesy Madhyahnika was to go to Kashmir some one hundred year after his own nirvana) Madhyahnika, Lo, went to Kashmir, *knowing that the time had come to fulfill the prophesy. In a cross-legged posture, he super-humanly covered nine valleys, which converged in a lake. The nagas were furious. They caused an earthquake and a terrible rain storm, but they could not move or even get him to shift.  He transformed the rain shower of arrows and missiles (thunderbolts and sheets of rain), which the nagas had hurled at him, into flowers; whereupon the nagas said in amazement, "What is your command?". He replied, 'I have come  to this land to fulfill a prophecy of one of the Teachers. Give this land to me'. They said, "We will offer the land covered by your sitting position. To this the elder replied, "Those depending on alms are supported in a place where there is sponsorship of each of them. Therefore householders must also be settled here (in fulfillment)." He had a sorcerer construct a magical city near there. Whereupon, he settled numerous people, who having brought saffron from Mt. interesting myth about the creation of kashmir, which i've read before (one of my histories of indian buddhism was written from a nyingma perspective).  still, what point are you trying to make with it?  in almost all tibetan buddhist traditions, madhyamika is the supreme ontology (or rather anti-ontology), so for them God certainly does not exist, as God would require a non-qualified, in-dependent existence, which for madhyamika is categorically impossible.

of course, there are plenty of flakes, again mostly writing for westerners, who insist on equating sunyata with the brahman, or even some personified notion of God, but that is absurd to anyone with an understanding of buddhism even slightly deeper than the absolute novice.
